RE: Debt and the Slow Moving Recovery
Without jobs, banks are weary to lend. With unemployment so high, you never know when the next round of job cuts is coming and from where.

You have to love a "recovery" where unemployment increased, bankruptcy increases, defaults increase, incomes decrease, etc.

Sadly, the recovery could be spurred along with a few policies that would actually help America:

1) Develop a real energy policy towards true independence (Nuke, Oil, Gas, Coal, while developing greener energies)
2) Re-write EPA regulations that hinder industries, especially mining
3) Sell off some government assets (land) to ranchers and a few developers
4) Control government spending

States that have legalized gambling should be using the proceeds to lend $ to small businesses that want to expand and hire. North Dakota has done this for over 100 years when they formed their own state owned bank, they also lend out tax $ collected but not yet appropriated. In the last 10 years the Bank of North Dakota has returned $300 million to the taxpayers from the interest collected from loan proceeds. In addition, jobs have been created along with individual and corporate income tax revenue increased.

Why don't more states own their own bank, would also help shield their economy from the Wall Street Shenigans.

BTW ND has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation and has a budget surplus.

You do that and the State of West Virginia will be armed and marching on the nation's capital in no time flat. The eastern half of Kentucky will probably be right behind us...

The EPA regulations that exist are there for good reason, and many of those regulations are routinely ignored by companies that are ruining the drinking water of the people who live around those mines. I can take you to several places for examples...

If you think this is the right way to go, just go to one of those places I'm talking about and drink the water for a week or 2. Then come back and talk to me...

RE: Debt and the Slow Moving Recovery
Bit, I'm referring specifically to the mining regs on copper and such out west. I am no way in favor of creating polution, but sometimes the regs are unreasonable and make it cost prohibitive to mine. Copper is a prime example as we have plenty of copper ore but EPA regs make it too expensive to mine in most cases.

Ironically the WSJ had a op-ed this morning pointing out that the EPA demands that NYC provide a cover for a 90 acre water facility. It is supposed to prevent between 165,000 and 325,000 cases of a disease they have 100 cases of annually. Cost, $1.6 BILLION. Sorry, that cost will never be recuperated nor is it practical in any fashion. Besides, with government estimates, you can usually double or triple and still be lowballing. Another exampe of the EPA run amok.

I have peripheral dealing with EPA issues and see the major cost overruns by the EPA continuously changing the game after making agreements on how to handle issues and cleanups. Often, the EPA will summarily change the game towards the most expensive option to meet an objective. That forces the pther party to cease operations and seek court relief. In the mean time, the EPA fines the party for not cleaning the property, though they ordered the change in operations. They then take over and mismanage every detail possible. I have seen the documentation to prove this and the EPA ran expenses to more than four times the original agreement.

RE: Debt and the Slow Moving Recovery
Well, I've seen how a couple of Superfund cleanup sites have been mismanaged, and heard "good enough for government work" on every job I've had that's been associated with the federal government. For what that's worth...

RE: Debt and the Slow Moving Recovery
Lived the "Close enough for Government work" for 9+ years. With us, it meant we would win, up to and including 100% kill ratios. We never got the benefit of the $$ loaded contracts, either.

Now I get to view how the remainder of the government works and UGLY, RIPOFF, FRAUD come to mind, as well as many other negative adjectives. I have to recall that government is necessary and that they actually do some good, but clearly there is a lot that can be corrected without harming the country and some corrections would benefit the country immensely.

RE: Debt and the Slow Moving Recovery
I have seen first hand what happens when private companies are allowed to "self-regulate" and there is no government control. Anyone that really believes that companies that are driven by quick profits and greed will look out for workers and citizens is drinking some heavy kool aid.
I am for lower government control in some cases but i also know that without the government our country would not be better off, this is why many minorities are not sold on the "no government" groups, without the government we would have had separate but equal for a longer time.
