This is good news for the NFL, Giants, Jets and the BE.

This is great news. This provides a world class facility for the Big Apple Bowl as well as a place for the football schools to hold their basketball tourney should we split.

Motor City Bowl seems to be pretty successful. I imagine NYC is a little more tourist friendly on New Years than Detroit.

Schedule the game for New Year's Day.
New Year's eve in The Big Apple followed by a bowl game featuring the Big East and Big Eleven? SEC? ACC? PAC10? Big 12?
New Year's Eve in New York + Big Apple Bowl = can't beat it.

True. You won't have to dodge bullets on your way to the stadium.

Only bad thing is it will take years for them to get this done. So we probably wont see anything until 2009 or 2010 when the league splits.

Uum, I'm a little (lot) ignorant here. Where exactly is the stadium going? If it's in NJ is it really part of NYC? I've never been up there before. Maybe it's one giant urban sprawl of a downtown?

Retractable Roof is far from a guarantee.
But if the NFL is "set" on putting a SuperBowl near NYC, that would be the easiest way to do it.
Giants and Jets have already stated they will not pay the $200 Million for the roof.
Current agreement is written w/o the roof.
It still just a possibility.

I was at the 1998 Motor Bowl (we won't discuss the result ) and while the game was fun, the rest of the "bowl experience" was not. Things might be different now though as that game was played at the old Pontiac Silverdome and the bowl was in its early stage. I believe they now play it at Ford Field, but I'm sure the UConn fans can answer that.

I've been to 3 Motor City Bowls (2001, 2002, and 2004). 2001 was the last in Pontiac, so the last two I went to were at Ford Field. Granted I live in Michigan so it isn't a far drive and I drove up that afternoon and drove home that night, but there isn't a lot to do in Detroit. They have a couple of casinos and you can go across the bridge or tunnel into Windsor and visit the bars or go to Casino Windsor, but that is about it.

The NYC, Philly, New Jersey area is all very close to each other. New Jersey by the Meadowlands is basically right next to NYC.

Yeah Mike I'm from a town called Elmwood Park which is 10 minutes from Giants Stadium. New York City proper may only be the 5 boroughs but the Urban Core itself includes Rockland, Westchester, and Nassau Counties within NY State, Fairfield County and part of New Haven County in Connecticut, Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, Union, Essex Counties and nowadays I'd even include Middlesex County in New Jersey. Elmwood Park and East Rutherford where Giants Stadium is located are in Bergen County. Giants Stadium is roughly 5 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel and therefore midtown Manhattan. NJ Transit is constructing a commuter rail station at the Meadowlands which would allow for travel between Midtown Manhattan and the complex in very rapid fashion. Another project ongoing is something my stepfather led the negotiations for and now the study itself which is a feasibility study for extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into the Meadowlands. By defintion Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Union counties are 100% urban. As for Philly and NY being very close, there is increasing numbers of people that commute from Camden County just across the river from Philadelphia to New York and people that come from as far as Delaware to Hudson County to work. People commute from New York and Northeast Jersey to Philly to work as well. There is an increasing amount of coordination amongst the Port Authorities, NJ Transit, SEPTA, and (NY)MTA as well as the Departments of Transportation in NYC, NYS, NJ, Delaware, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania in terms of solving the transportation issues of the region. It is thought by many urban planners and public policy experts in the region that New York and Philadelphia as separate metropolitan areas will cease to exist likely with the 2010 Census. While there are rural areas of New Jersey, no county in New Jersey has a population small enough to be rural in an official sense, because each county has urbanized/suburbanized areas. New Jersey is the country's first metropolitan state and likely to be the only one. While I bet the areas around Louisville are really nice, I've been brought up in the Corridor region and couldn't really live anywhere else. Southern California and Florida are close but they don't have our transportation options. You won't physically be in NY at this stadium but you're a stones throw away.
