Former Trojan Track Athlete Marshall Clark Passes Away
Clark ran at USC from 1955-1957, coached at San Jose State and Stanford.

Oct. 9, 2002

Marshall Clark, who lettered for USC track and field from 1955-1957 and later went on to coach at Stanford and San Jose State, has died of a heart attack at the age of 69.

Clark spent the last 10 years coaching track and field at Saratoga (Calif.) High. Prior to coaching at Saratoga, he was the head coach at San Jose State until the program was disbanded in 1988. Before that, he coached at the University of Montana from 1978-1980. He also coached at Stanford from 1968-1978. He led the Cardinal to a second-place NCAA finish in cross country in 1968. Clark also served as a coach for the U.S. National Track Team at the 1972 International Indoor Meet in Moscow.

Clark's involvement in track and field began as an athlete at Muir High in Pasadena, Calif. After a stint with the Coast Guard, he ran for USC from 1955-1957, lettering all three years as a distance runner. After USC, he ran with the Southern California Striders and was a member of their sprint medley team that ran the third-fastest time in the world in 1960.

Runners coached under Clark include Olympians Don Kardong, Duncan Macdonald and Anthony Sandoval.

Clark is survived by his wife Carol, son Richard and daughters Stacy and Shannon (who herself lettered for USC track from 1987-1990 while placing in the top ten all time in three distance events) and stepdaughters Michelle and Jacqueline, plus six grandchildren.

A memorial for Marshall Clark will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. at Saratoga High School, 203000 Herriman Ave., Saratoga, Calif., 95070.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marshall Clark Track and Cross Country Fund, c/o Saratoga High School.
