8 catholic yes votes(including themselves) plus
UConn, Syracuse and???? USF? Lville? Doesnt sound like its quite over yet.

I don't think the Catholic schools get to vote in the Nova upgrade since its a football matter.

I didnt think so either, but the article said everyone has a vote(said 11 needed more once tcu is onboard) Of course it wouldnt shock me if the author didnt have his facts right.

In super-majority votes, the tradition is that the number is usually rounded up, no matter what the percentage is over the whole number. Based upon McMurphy's article it looks like the BE will round down if less than .5 and round up if over .5.

If Nova were recommended by the fb schools (6 of 8) first it would then require 11 votes to get them in (.75 X 15 = 11.25, they can't vote on themselves - but it would basically be a formality vote for an internal member that was acceptable to the BE football schools), an outside candidate such as BYU would require 12 votes (.75 X 16 = 12) for an all-sports spot and once TCU is on board it would require 13 votes (.75 X 17 = 12.75).

The question that remains unanswered is - do federated football only members only need the 6 of 8 to get invited like the days prior to the ACC raid, or do the new by-laws state that even federated members have to come before the entire league and be voted upon after recommendation by the football schools? And once TCU is on board, assuming no other expansion prior, it will be 7 of 9 (.75 X 9 = 6.75) to at the very least get the recommendation.

The path to expansion is never an easy one.

Cheers,
Neil

Really? It wasn't that easy for 9, 11, and 10 member all-sports conferences - See ACC expansion, Big Ten expansion, and Pac-10 expansion.

Interesting.
-They list our market as Raleigh/Durham (#25)
-We are expanding our stadium to 60,000 in 2016

"East Carolina, whose TV market (ranked No. 25) is surprisingly close to UCF's No. 19 Orlando TV market, has led C-USA in attendance the past three seasons and had the second-highest non-AQ home attendance average last season (49,665).

East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland would not specifically address the Pirates' interest in the Big East, but did address with CBSSports.com whether ECU could compete in any conference. Houston AD Mack Rhoades and UCF AD Keith Tribble declined comment for this story.

"I believe that East Carolina's ability to compete with most of the institutions in the conferences with automatic qualification has been proven on the field, in the stands and by the marketplace," Holland said.

Since 2005, the Pirates have seven wins against AQ BCS conferences; the second most of the Big East candidates behind Navy's 14-17 record vs. AQ BCS teams.

Holland also referenced the 2009 Liberty Bowl between East Carolina and Arkansas, which drew a 10.3 rating (2.4 million households) on ESPN in the combined markets of Greenville, Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte, N.C., compared to the 2008 Holiday Bowl between TCU and Boise State, which drew a 5.1 rating (2.4 million households) in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Holland added the Pirates' attendance numbers -- they would have ranked fourth last year in the Big East in attendance (49,665) -- will increase when ECU's stadium expands to 60,000 in 2016"

The fact the ECUs AD will speak and not the ADs from UH and CF speaks volumes. UH and UCF have commitments and don't want to offend the powers at BE. ECU is outside looking in and Holland is still trying to sell his program for te 12thspot. Taking is thi one step further, the 12th spot willbe one of Nova or Temple to capture the Philly market

05-nono Holland also said he would not address the Big East situation but was smart enough to take advantage of opportunity to get some free national press to discuss the great things going on at ECU. If you ask me he made the AD's at the other schools look silly for just saying no comment. TH basically controlled that interview. He called for quotes specifically about the Big East and Holland said he would not address that but basically spoon fed this guys with all the positives going on at ECU and he published it and
gave us some great national press. I actually think it was a slick and brilliant move by Holland....He never once mentioned anything about moving to another conference or wanting to move to another conference nor did he ever mention The Big East. Also it is amazing how you have all the answers and everything figured out yet no one else has this information.....Man you must be one well connected guy, heck I think you have it all figured out even before the Big East.

You face the same issues in the Big East as the ACC and BIG 10, and then you have to add the extra dynamics of the Catholic Basketball members, and the Commissioners who come from founding Catholic Basketball member Providence, who is supposed to have the best interests of the "entire" conference at heart. That is impossible when half of the schools interests sometimes contradicts what the other half need. Then where do you think the "un-biased" commisssioners' loyalties lye.
That is what I mean when I say it is easier in a 12 member All-sports conference.

Pretty much how I viewed it. He avoided commenting on the Big East while selling our program. Great move, IMO.

Did e=anyine see where Terry Holand talked about ECU expanding the Fick to 60K? We at ECU had heared about the aproval to start planning an expansion to 58K, but no date eas set. Now TH says 60K and give a date of 2016. That would move ECU past NCSU (57,500) and just behind UNC (62,970) and we would still have a lot more room to grow.

When I attended Duke 25 years ago, East Carolina was not on the radar in Raleigh-Durham in terms of TV and newspaper sports coverage.

About the only time East Carolina ever came up was during Halloween. Helluva party.

Times have changed.

Fox 8 in The Triad (Greensboro/Winston-Salem area) ran a 3 minute sports story earlier this month on our Pirate Club event there.

I'm not saying we dominate the larger markets in our state by any means, I'm just saying we are a part of it.

How far away is ECUs campus to Raleigh/Durham btw. First I heard them count that market as it's "home".

We tried to tell you that was our market but you wouldn't listen.

Large market can have that problem as well. While visiting family in Houston, I rarely heard the local media talking about the Coogs and having lived in Orlando I know how difficult it is for UCF to get coverage over UF and FSU but especially UF.

The Raleigh media was dragged kicking and screaming into covering ECU sports but they have gotten to the point where they have to because their viewers demand it and that is simply because a lot of ECU grads and fans live in the Raleigh market.

The whole market thing comes down to TV sets not fans of your school watching those tv sets. UH and UCF have a ton of tv's around them but so does ECU if you simply do the research to what cable providers in the nearby ECU market would be delighted to carry anything ECU related. I am sure the Big East who has a big decision on their hands has done their homework. UCF and UH are no brainers if you are simply looking at tv market size. ECU you have to peal back a few more layers when looking at tv market and when you do you figure out our market is much larger then one we get credit for and anybody above intern level at ESPN and Fox alaready knows that so the choice the Big East has to make is who can make their FB better and IMO ECU, UCF and UH are all great candidates for that.
