Labor Board Tells Boeing New Factory Breaks Law
Just too much... (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/21/busine....html?_r=1)
Quote:In what may be the strongest signal yet of the new pro-labor orientation of the National Labor Relations Board under President Obama, the agency filed a complaint Wednesday seeking to force Boeing to bring an airplane production line back to its unionized facilities in Washington State instead of moving the work to a nonunion plant in South Carolina.
Add to Portfolio

In its complaint, the labor board said that Boeing’s decision to transfer a second production line for its new 787 Dreamliner passenger plane to South Carolina was motivated by an unlawful desire to retaliate against union workers for their past strikes in Washington and to discourage future strikes. The agency’s acting general counsel, Lafe Solomon, said it was illegal for companies to take actions in retaliation against workers for exercising the right to strike.

The laws 'protecting' unions are a bit slanted in the unions direction. The NCLB is saying that by building a second line in a non union state Boeing is dissolving the unions effective right to strike.

The fact Boeing has internal mails saying we need to build out of state so that a strike does not take us completely down works against them..

I took one course in business law (just to get my toes wet) and I was amazed at how much power unions have over companies. If someone is trying to organize a union an employer can't even give counter arguments to the staff....

Quote:This is an absolute assault on a great corporate citizen and on S.C.’s right-to-work status. We will continue to do everything we can to protect that status, and to stand with companies like Boeing who understand what it means to take care of their employees without the interference of a meddlesome, self-serving union. This bullying will not be tolerated in S.C. ----Nikki Haley on her FB page

The problem is that Boeing is keeping most if not all of its military work in Washington State, while the airliners go elsewhere. The rules are much different about strikes on Military projects.

This needs to be framed correctly, "Obama administration jeopardizes 500 new South Carolina jobs."

No wonder MFG has left this country in stunning numbers over the years.
Why don't unions just start their own companies.

Torch, its not just the 500 Boeing jobs at stake, its the future direction of ALL companies considering expansion. For Boeing, it may have been safer building over seas...less American jobs.

RE: Labor Board Tells Boeing New Factory Breaks Law
If I ran Boeing I'd move the plant and let the government try to stop me. And if the gov found a court that backs them up then I'd move the plant out of the country. At the very least, the case would be tied up in the court until the Kenyan is gone.

This is a business decision apparently aimed at reducing the loss of productivity and cost. This happens every day and if you're a stock holder this is what you want. I'd tell the workers that if they promise not to strike then I'd promise not to move. BTW, when companies move they usually have programs in place for current employees to move with them and I'm sure Boeing does the same thing. The Boeing union employees are so retarded that they don't realize that when they strike and production goes down they're giving Airbus a huge public relations lift to all potential customers.

Actually it's more jobs than that. Many economics-deficient liberals here don't understand this concept, like Greg, but those 500 jobs create other jobs around the area. Those employees are buying products, shopping at stores, buying cars, going out to eat, going to movies, etc. Not to mention their taxes, when used properly, can "dress up" an area, making it more appealing to new businesses and any city or county workers that would need to be hired to serve the additional people would be directly attributable to them.

Kind of funny that this happens now. Was talking to a liberal friend who allowed himself to be dragged to see Atlas Shrugs Pt. 1. Besides his dislike of the film (as entertainment) he was adamant that the types of government power grabs and over-reach could and would never happen here.

I wonder if I should call him?

If I were Boeing, I would dismantle every plant in the state of Washington, and move it to the South. For bonus points, dismantle it brick by brick and ship it on a train just like the Soviets moved entire factories back during WWII.

Not like they don't have plenty of land to expand down there. Hell, with the money they infuse into the economy, they could probably build a South-North corridor from 95 into North Charleston.

If Boeing was snubbing unions, Boeing could have built the plant 125 mi. north in Vancouver. Their case against Boeing seems frivolous to me. Why did unions wait till after the plant was built? .

SOAF, imagine how that would play among the leftist union types. How could they spin the fact that a company LEFT this country because their own union made too many demands? According to their ilk, these EVIL corporations are outsourcing their jobs and plants overseas. Yes, the same evil bunch that have paid them handsomely for working for them. The same company that got tired of their demands.

I'm predicting that this won't end well for the union.

I imagine the union(s) would say that Boeing is yet another greedy, anti-American corporation looking to maximize profits by employing cheap overseas labor.

Of course, this has been happening for several years already.

The only reason Boeing outsourced some sections of the 787 to foreign companies was to gain orders for the aircraft from various National Air Lines in those countries.

My "this has been happening" line pertained to the typical left wing/labor talking points when discussing American businesses that have moved operations outside the US.
