I know this has probably been asked before but people at work today were asking me why most of the mens and womens tennis teams rosters are not Americans. Does anyone know why this is because I could not answer?

As for the amount of foreign players. If you look at the majority of successful programs out there they are dominated by foreign players.

Yes, I made that point also on an earlier thread. Tennis is just much bigger overseas, esp. in S.A. and Europe. More of the best athletes gravitate towards tennis instead of futbol or basketball, on a percentage basis. Same in golf, too, to a lesser extent, which was obvious from watching the Master's just ended...

Pretty much the straight "socio-economic" stratification of our sporting system in America. Youth leagues can't focus on "individual sports" because it is based on mass participation and forming a well organized, hierachy of participation where participants fall off the esclator and become part of the spectator-base... it's the "professional sports model" at its best.

The quote by Deford is fairly telling "The United States is less and less a power in some individual sports -- especially the old country club games of golf and tennis." ENTER the squabble that most people have had over the past 8 years of the new "mission" of etsu athletics (requires small caps)... the move away from the blue-collar, meat-and-potatos of college sports to the "country club" mentality.

Sorry guys, that doesn't pay the bills in the real world.
