Since Shields didn't sign him, he's now not very good. Had Shields signed him, he'd have been the next saviour.

He is likely a "project" wherever he went. I do believe that if he came here and redshirted, like we wanted him to, and he was as much of a "sponge" as Gus he could have learned a lot from Joe Kleine. I'd say it's 50-50 that he ends up back here in a couple of years, regardless.

According to the El Paso paper, Vint had two offers and we were one of them. Of course, Derek Fisher only had 2 offers and he turned out okay.

Basketball player Hooper Vint, a 6-foot-10 center from Van Buren (Ark.) High School, told KFSM-TV of Fort Smith, Ark., Wednesday he will sign a National Letter of Intent with UTEP on Friday morning.

"I really like UTEP," Vint told KFSM. "It was a great school when I went and visited. I really like the coaches there. Coach (Tim) Floyd's a great guy."

Vint was offered a scholarship by Arkansas-Little Rock and had several schools show interest -- including Houston, Nebraska, Wichita State and Missouri State.

He said he will sign his letter at 10 a.m. MDT in his high school gymnasium

Can't really blame Hoop. UTEP is a school rich in basketball tradition. They averaged 8,959 in attendance last year. Just a "little" more than UALR. We start getting support like that, we may sign an Arkansas kid on occasion. Unfortunately, for Arkansas kids, the LR still stands for "last resort". Luckily, UALR is viewed much more positively outside our State's borders. And, UTEP also graduated a 6'11" and a 6'10" kid.

You don't think Hooper was our No. 1 target this signing period?

He definitely was not after we got the commitment from Michael Javes. Now, of course, I will feel better when Javes actually signs.

You really dont know who Jim Harris is..? He was at probably half our games. Coach Shields usually shook his hand when he entered The Jack on game days. He's the one that covered for Coach Shields after The Stevie Incident. And he has real media credentials, not some login password. I suspect Mr Harris has an inside track.

I know he writes a column. I think he's a pretty good writer and enjoy reading him. I don't recall him writing about UALR. Maybe I missed it. Doesn't he write a lot about baseball and boxing?

I guess there's arguments on both sides. I'll go with Jeff's knowledge and ability to assess our program's needs. It does seem strange to me that a guy we have been recruiting for 4 years, who lives in the State, who's dad does our games, doesn't have his official visit until 4 days before the official signing date. It would seem to me that we would get our "Number One Target" on campus a little sooner. But, heck, what do I know about recruiting.

With regard to time spent recruiting Hooper- at least it didn't cost us a ton of money. Flying to Europe to see Will Neighbour this summer, going to Mexico to meet with Alex's family, etc. is obviously a lot more costly than driving to Van Buren. I'll be a lot more upset if we lose Ron Baker, who's cost us a lot of time and a good bit more out of the recruiting budget.

If our coaches had spent dozens of trips and four years watching him play, that tells me that we were pretty damn interested in him. I think this is another situation where if we'd signed him, he'd really have been hot ****, and now that we didn't get him, we weren't really that high on him. Have you ever seen Jeff criticize anything Shields did or didn't do? Sounds like another case of sour grapes to me.

Looks like you and mjs are almost always on opposite sides of most issues. Makes for an interesting board.

Oh I don't know about that, it's usually about the coaching. We probably agree on more things than people think, but we obviously don't see Coach Shields in the same light. We both love the Trojans, but we have different ideas of what constitutes success in a basketball program. It's shame that we don't agree on more things, because he's one hell of a fine guy, and a great Trojan fan, and I have a lot of respect for him. He's definitely a better fan than I am.

I admit that I'm a poor loser, and take this stuff way to seriously.

You are thinking of Jim Bailey. He writes a column for the Democrat-Gazette and you are right, Jim Bailey does not write much about UALR. He does write a lot about baseball and boxing.

Jim Harris works for Sports 360. An online sports blog.

RE: Vint to UTEP
It stands to reason that over the last several months or even years, Hooper was our #1 target. However, while Hooper was weighing his options and not committing, we were able to gain commitments from other kids who are arguably comparable to Vint. So as the signing day approached, we had options and did not need him particularly. Sure, we would have wanted him and would have taken him, but we had options and he saw a better opportunity at UTEP to play immediately. It also freed us up to find what we currently need most, a perimeter shooter. So everyone is really right about whether or not he was the top recruit depending on if you look at just the signing week or the last several months.

And besides I doubt Shields gives half a damn about northwest Arkansas as most of the sports fans and seemingly including Trojan fans do. He wants good ball players and to win and local politics is a distant second.

Thanks. You are right. I enjoy reading Jim Bailey since he writes about stuff no one else around here does. I guess I really don't have a clue who Jim Harris is.
