what happened? is Babylon falling?
the new tennis rankings are out, 2 A-SUN teams are ranked and ETSU is not one of them. I am told the coach is now paid $100K and the team drops out of the rankings? I guess he needs another raise!

RE: what happened? is Babylon falling?
Did you read the story and interview with Yaser after we lost to UNF? Check it out.... The rest of the league has gotten better, and we've graduated Enrique, Sebastian, Oscar and other extraordinary talents....

We've won two NCAA tournament matches in the last 3 years.
We were ranked earlier in the year, before the UNF loss....
I'm pretty certain Yaser doesn't make anywhere near $100K.

Glad you're interested, though!

RE: what happened? is Babylon falling?
i read that this years team is the same as last year. actually they have added a player so this year should be stronger than last year? yes in the past they were much better but this years team has 4 players who have been nationally ranked. they are currently not ranked and other teams are. maybe the coach is distracted by all of his female facebook friends. and yes I have overheard several around campus saying he makes up to or 100K.

according to The Tennessean (tennessean.com) his base salary is 60,000/year. In comparison, Bartow's base salary is 140000/year

You are correct. Enrique is one of the finest if not THE finest tennis player to grace the courts since Yaser himself. I don't like Yaser a whole lot but he's a helluva coach. Losing to UNF sucks but we should win the conference and be back on our way the NCAA again this year.

so we shouldn't be mad at basketball losing cause we had Mister playing for us in the past. the argument about Enrique does not hold water. but I have to say Enrique was the best player to ever play tennis at ETSU

my bad on the salary, the ETSU web site says $71,800 + $25,000 in benefits = 96,800 and I said 100K (missed it by this much)

Enrique wasn't better than Yaser. Enrique probably wasn't better than Pierre Arnold, though that's debatable. Lenny Simpson? George Paris? Enrique was certainly top 5, but not the best.

It's so funny trying to educate some of you all on college tennis......

I Know what should be best and that is the men's team this year in the ASUN with 4 players in the lineup that have been nationally ranked. come on doctor and stop making excuses for them. Tennessee has 4 or more players who have been nationally ranked and they are #1. please educate us on the difference. what other team in the NCAA's is not ranked but has 4 players in the lineup who have been nationally ranked?

Krtickova, I just read about her. WOW. she beat the #1 NCAA doubles team and national champions. what a great player she would have made for the Buc's!

I would bet the benefits are his health insurance of 10-15 K (depending on whether he has a family or not) with the remainder being vacation/sick days and a small amount of non-salary money that goes into retirement.

You make is sound like the benefits are a car and university funded hookers, please he gets to go to the doctor.

I don't know anything about the sport or this coach, but the guy makes 71,800.

Sigh........
Do you think, bucfan99, that there could be a difference when a player is "nationally ranked", between, say.......ranked #1, vs. ranked #50?
Currently, UT (#1) has players ranked #s 3, 12, 44, and 51. They have the #1-ranked doubles team. That's pretty awesome. If I recall, last year when we had to play them in the second round of the NCAAs, it was even better than that (and we even took a match off them, losing 4-1). I'm not sure of your source/data for ETSU having 4 players who were nationally ranked. That's possible, but I don't think so. Please provide some data for me on that. Certainly nothing like what UT has now. And certainly not a single one at the moment (although those things can change quite a bit this time of year). Individual player rankings go down through 125, and I don't think there's a single ASun player in the top 125.

And as far as making excuses, what? I'm certainly not. Yaser put it quite plainly in that interview - we're down from what we were, and the rest of the league is catching up. (By the way, Campbell is #68.) Tell me where I was making excuses. I think we've underachieved, and I'd most certainly like us to have done better - just like in basketball or whatever. But there's still a month left in the season. It'll be a dogfight at the conference tournament, for sure........

Right now UNF is ranked 75th - the very bottom of the rankings list (they only go to that number). Who knows? ETSU could be #76, although I doubt it. We were ranked 50th at the beginning of the year, although that's almost arbitrary, sort of like the RPI basketball rankings early in the season. When we lost to UNF, we were at that time #63, and they were #72.
All that being said, right at this minute, these rankings are posted at the ASun's website. Not sure where they're getting that, because that's not what the ITA and the NCAA show (which is what I used for the above numbers).

Conference Standings

2010-11 Men's Tennis

USC Upstate 3-2 7-10
Lipscomb 2-2 5-6
Kennesaw State 2-2 7-7

RE: what happened? is Babylon falling?
perhaps the team is just under achieving and not being distracted or the coach being distracted. I am well aware of the superiority of UT over ETSU and did not mean to compare them.
collegetennisonline.com is a site that shows the previous nationally ranked players - Bottoni April 20, 2010 #95, Teraz March 2, 2010 #85, Gille Sept. 14, 2010 #97, and Bandres Feb. 15, 2011 #112. you have to agree on paper they are deserving of a #50 ranking.
ETSU will probably win the conference since they have so much experience...but what if they lose?
interesting to ask UNF, Campbell, Upstate, Stetson if they would trade their players with ETSU's players - my bet is they would not hesitate!

RE: what happened? is Babylon falling?
Didn't mean to compare them? Why that flies in the face of your very words in previous post. You even said, and I quote: "please educate us on the difference...". And you claim that isn't trying to compare them?

I assure you the coach (Zaatini) is NOT distracted. As I've posted earlier, there have been very few (if any) athletes ever on a team at ETSU that have his desire to win and drive. I personally haven't known any, and that covers a lot of ground. His will to win was simply ferocious; almost scary, and he tries to instill that in his guys....

Thank you for digging up the ranking data. I don't think I knew Bandres was ranked #112 (how nebulous is that?) earlier this year.

Today they dropped a heart-breaking match to 20th-ranked U. of San Diego, 4-3, with Juan Ramirez losing the deciding match 6-4 in the third. This ETSU team is good, but certainly they have to some extent underachieved. But don't count them out. And if they lose in the conference championships, what is your point? That Zaatini should be fired? Ha!

The women won the doubles point, and have won 4 of the first sets in singles, but appears they are heading for some split-set matches....

Bucs win again. Babylon has not fallen.

Women probably have very little chance in the NCAAs; men will depend on the draw, but realistically it will be tough. Just not as solid as the last few years.
