A-Sun Non-Scholly Football?
With Stetson and Mercer's new team, is there any chance that the A-Sun will start a non-scholly league?

I've know that we've talked about this before, but any updates?

With Campbell going, it's just us, Mercer and JU. Kennesaw is going for scholarship ball. Not enough to have a league I don't think.

But you could take Campbell and and Davidson as football only then you would have 5. Then the league puts pressure on FGCU, Upstate, UNF to field teams and you are at 8.

Bring in two new Div. II schools (West Georgia would probably be interested)
that already play it or would add it (West Florida has also spoken about being interested). and you are up to 10. then you have the perfect league with minimal travel for a non-scholly football league.

you don't "put pressure" on a conference member to sponsor a sport the conference doesn't have. It's not like ETSU adding soccer from whatever they found in the couch cushions...it's a major undertaking and the institution is either ready for it or it isn't. FGCU is exploring it but won't pull the trigger for half a decade at least.

I don't know what's going on with UWF, but UWG is scholarship D2 football. Can't imagine they'd want to bring their whole department up to D1 only to take away every football scholarship.

I think it could happen. As stated get Campbell, Mercer, JU, and Stetson and that is five. Maybe get Davidson, and ETSU and you are at 7. I think you might be able to get ETSU to do non-scholly.

Just thinking out loud.

I think it could work. It will need to have some vision by the A-Sun offices to get it going though.

Again, the A-Sun office has nothing to do with it until the schools themselves get the ball rolling. Programs first, conference later.

FGCU won't be playing football for a while. With all of the state budget cuts going on, there's no way that we can put a program together for some time.

Schedules for Campbell, Stetson, Jacksonville, Mercer, and Davidson will be regionalized. Whether this is accomplished by splitting the PFL into divisions or by creating a new, Southern football league has not been determined. JU's athletic director said yesterday that divisions will be discussed later. Alternatively, I would guess a new league will be a consideration if the PFL continues to be denied an automatic NCAA playoff bid.

According to a press release, the MEAC will retain its automatic bid. The PFL will remain locked out of the playoffs for the foreseeable future.

I think Campbell is looking to eventually move to Scholarship football in Big South. I think the pioneer league is a step to that end.
