new arena
Murry said today on the coaches' show that we need a new arena. He was responding to a question from a caller. He went on to say that the Dome actually hurts us in recruiting and implied that the other schools in the Asun have nicer new arenas. He said that it will cost a lot of money, but we need to figure that out. Question is....Was he speaking candidly? Or are seeds being planted by the puppet masters?

I've heard him mention this before, I really think he is speaking candidly. I think he feels they need to upgrade to a new arena.

Who cares as long as we get a new arena?

He said the same thing at the end of last season multiple times. I dont think he has any leverage on the matter though.

I doubt the Dome is really hurting them in recruiting... it's the CONFERENCE. Like it or not. The building isn't losing in the semi's... no doubt a new facility is in order but I don't think we allow him to blame the building that has seen a ton of great talent walk on that floor.

RE: new arena
What is going to say? of course ETSU needs a new arena if he said anything else it would be seen as a lie and people might start paying attention to others things ETSU is churning out.
Yeah Baskeball is going to be our new flagship program and it needs a new home.
As soon as we build a golf center, soccer stadium, baseball field, tennis courts, softball field, upgrade the track
and maybe put in a jai alai arena (gotta keep those florida schools happy). Then we will be build an a basketball arena. Of course by the time we get all that done it will be time to reinvate and expand some of the project listed above. But after that, yeah basketball arena team, Wait the Volley team needs a court. Hmm well okay sometime we will get to it because basketball is out NEW FLAGSHIP!!!
What I don't understand is basketball is the only sport ETSU has that has a prayer of making money.
Seems like the smart move would have been build the arena. Market basketball like crazy, book concerts,
ice shows, monster truck rallies and any other event you could, make some money and use that money to
help pay for the other projects.

I really don't understand how or why we started stadium projects for softball, baseball, golf, and soccer before working on a new arena. Shows where our priorities are, what we get for having a tennis coach at AD

And why in the world could we be doing those minor sport facilities knowing that we are the only state university without a football team? That, to me, should be priority number 1 along with the basketball facility. Tennis coach. Wow.

RE: new arena
Stanton went through 3 AD's who were qualifed for the job and probably told him he was an idiot for wanting to drop football. So he decided to hire someone who wasn't close to qualifed, knew he wasn't qualifed, knew the only reason he was being given the job was to say Yes Sir, Dr. Stanton Sir, that is a brillant idea, do you to Charmin or Angel Soft Sir? Stanton has the lackey he always wanted and Mullins gets a nice bump in pay and to finally boss
people around and act important.
BTW doesn anybody else remember when Mullins got the job they mentioned his ability to fundraise and the example they
gave was able to raise 40,000 for the tennis program. He raised 40k for tennis, he can run a an athletic department with a budget in the millions.

RE: new arena
I would tend to think the dome hurts us more in recruting than the conference. A 18 year old kid from Memphis or Missouri hasn't heard of any SoCon or ASUN teams, so what does he care.
And lets be honest...take the blue and gold blinders off for a minute. THe dome is old and falling apart, you can't fit 6000 people in it anymore. I think a recruit would be more impressed with the Curb Event Center than the dome. I'm telling you, I thought the curb was lame too until I saw a game there. It is a NICE place. Yes, the arena setup is cookie cutter and I don't like that, but its just a nice facility period...from the bathrooms to the lobby...everything.

The dome doesn't help, it's an eye sore. The floor is a million miles from the stands, there's a ton of empty space, it has no feel of a basketball arena.

Straight...I can't agree more.
I think ETSU athletics is in it's worst shape ever. What a way to celebrate the school's centennial! I don't have Buc Pride...I have Buc Embarrassment.
The only way to see how bad things are is to see the books...where is ETSU athletics financially?
Who can save the sinking pirate athletic ship? What needs to happen to bring Buc spectators back? This is much more than a wins and losses problem... Cynicism of Buc fans needs to be cured. What needs to be done? I would like to see a list!

For that matter, Mercer's University Center isn't bad. It is a little small for what ETSU could use but overall I thought it was nice.

It will be a significant challenge. The damage done, I believe, is real. Sure, things can be turned around, but it will take a major, big time attitude adjustment. Stanton and Mullins have aided and feasted off that old attitude of defeatism. It will take a house cleaning and a sales campaign like no other ever attempted at ETSU. It'll have to include all new players from the presidents office, athletic department, alumni and foundation leaders, student leaders, the BFFF and all their folks, and new political arrangements. The past way of doing business will have to be flushed, and a modern, forward looking athletic model will have to be built around football first and foremost and basketball next. Of course, I've said nothing new here. But, let's be real here. ETSU needs a ground shaking athletic attitude adjustment in order to start moving forward again. The end.

Buc66... Spot on analysis in my book. Could it be the Tri Cities and Buc alumni are just waiting for something they can support?

Aircraft Hangar, the Dome was a mistake to ever build, much less play basketball in.

Because I would be dead before any other project was ever attempted, that and the other projects don't cost a fraction of what a basketball arena will.
I do think we should use the Dome for monster truck events, you wouldn't even have to clean it up, all profit no expense.
I'm gone again you people are to negative, bad vibes, man.

Those projects are small enough to shift the student debt service from the sinking of the bond on the Dome in order to build the new nests. I'd predict there are conversations about how they can add new fees to the student debt service in order to build the arena, unless there's been an unspoken halt to the idea because of the new pet projects that Stanton wants now which don't include athletics facilities funding.
