He will definitely be defensive minded, having been a D Coordinator. Most of his Defensive strategies at Wake revolved around speed over size. He relied more on zone defense in the secondary and linebacker driven pass rush schemes. We know we'll be employing a 3 -4 but with the move to FBS that may change. O Coordinator Mullins will have a free hand on offense. Unless we find a great running back look for a pass heavy offense coming out of the option formation.
As far as his coaching ability:
He comes highly recommened from two established FBS coaches he's worked for with a decent track record of success themselves (Donnan and Grobe).
If the number of his former players at his introduction press conference is any measure, he is very capable of establishing good relationships with those he mentors.
Almost all of his staff at Charlotte are former associates of his from other staffs, which indicates good relations with his fellow coaches.
He's very good at interacting with the fans and community, always a plus.
Bottom line, if his game day coaching is up to snuff then he will be a very good coach. At the end of the day the record on the field is mostly in the hands of the players, and I think Coach Lambert already has displayed the ability to provide the players with what they need to be successful.
