Patton will blame the bad season on injuries.

Yep.

Which teams dont face a series of injuries during the season? Occasionally some years have many more injuries than others - like 2007 Huskie football. Some teams overcome those while others don't.

I don't consider the injuries experienced by 2010/11 NIU hoops to be all that out of the ordinary for a season. Heck, we lost Xman out of the box last yr.

Good teams have players in the wings. How many times has many a coach often said when a player goes down that it's an opportunity for the next guy to step up and contribute during games.

BTW & for those caring and following Jake Anderson: He was 1 for 8 from treyland and scored seven points in a loss.

Good for Grady I say. I cannot help but admire his resolve.

How does that whole dual sport eligibilty thing work?

RE: I Can See It Coming
This Patton guy really knows how to handle players. I am sure Grady feels great about hearing this:

"Patton said Grady’s increased playing time is out of necessity.

“He’s playing more by default,” Patton said. “If we had what we started out with – with Bryan Hall and with Kyree Jones, and even with the walk-on Trey Edwards – you wouldn’t see him playing. So in a lot of ways I guess you could say he’s been a blessing in disguise, just to have him. At least he gives you another body, he gives you another person to practice against.

“We wouldn’t have envisioned him playing, having come out from football in (December), and being a main cog in our wheel.”"

The guy is a dumdf_ck and should just leave now. Way to handle players, dumb***. Way to build confidence, idiot!

What do we gain by keeping this guy through the end of the season????? What do we lose. I think we lose a lot by letting him stay. He is making it impossible to keep him so that the AD has to fire him and then pay him to put his feet up.

Patton is an egotistical maniac who obviously can't say one nice thing about his players. Not only is he an awful basketball coach but he's also a public relations nightmare. I wouldn't blame Grady if he walked away, focused on training for football, and laughed when we lost out for the rest of the season. To his credit he's probably too good of a teammate to do so.

Wow. I'm telling you, get rid of the guy now. There is no point in keeping the clown until the end of the season out of duty. The players have quit on him and I don't blame them at all.

Get a head start on the coaching search, let the seniors finish their careers with dignity (instead of losing to Toledo), let some of the guys on the roster show what they can do, showcase them for the next staff.

This is a miserable situation for everyone involved, including Patton himself.

The only reason I see for keeping him right now are financial reasons. That's it.

and that's sadly a HUGE reason bearing on any decision....plus as badly as we think are these Huskies and thier coach, a few others teams in MAC are equally or worse off.

We NIU bball fans are experiencing what EMU football fans have suffered for more than a decade.

Interesting that you note Jake's bad game last nite, yet failed to mention he's also the BIG 12's current Rookie of the week, after 2 stellar performances last week against 2 nationally ranked teams! Sooooooo what he didn't play well last nite, all great athletes have nites like that. I suppose you, like the "coach cagy cager" have something to gain by trying to hurt Jake's reputation. Good Luck with that! Jake continues to handle his business on and off the court! His future is very bright! unlike yours, cagy and Mr. Patton.

Ha, I'm sure Cybes was just stating some stats he had seen from last night...I doubt he was trying to belittle Jake, settle down a bit.

As for the topic of conversation, Patton, it's embarrassing, he has made it impossible, regardless of money, to keep him. If we were losing, but he would handle media and players better, I can see keeping him just because you don't want to eat the money. But it's went too far....WAY too far...

He is making the decision easier. Must want a year off with pay. I don't see how his future in coaching will be very bright though. He must have options as an assistant somewhere.

had I followed and known of Jake's season overall I would have documented his achievements. I simply read box score last nite and reported a stat.

I harbor no ill will re: Jake directly nor for his departure. He was probably wise getting outta dodge before any future in bball he may have was severely tarnished.

What an abolutely terrible thing to say! It is SO insensitive, that I cannot imagine anyone saying it to anyone, let alone a player who walked on to the team and has already helped it.

If I were Grady, I would storm into Compher's office with a copy of the article and then quit, telling Compher that Patton can get along with what he's got and to call him back when the next coach is hired.

If the quote is true, I would think that that would be enough to fire the jag.

Grady is the second best player on the team.

RE: I Can See It Coming
After the last game (Seattle) on the post game interview it seemed to me that Bill Baker was trying to say how badly the players played in the first half, and particularly, for some reason, singled out Demarcus. I think as a defense of Grady, Patton said something like, "well, you know, he really shouldn't even be out there, etc..." I am sure that in his mind he was saying that as a defense of Grady getting off to a poor start in the Seattle game. It was a dumb answer to Baker. He should have told Baker, "Hey, Demarcus is doing a great job for us. That's why he started. Yes, he didn't get off to a great start today, and that's probably my fault. I wish we had done a better job preparing him to start. But we all had trouble in the first half. We picked it up in the second half, and hope to keep getting better from here on out."

That's what Division I coaches do. Protect your players. Build confidence with your actions and your words. Take responsibility. Take pressure off players. If he can't do that, and obviously he can't since he continuously does the opposite, then he doesn't belong coaching at this level.

Couldn't agree with you more, but you, I and everyone else also know we'll never ever hear Patton say the first three words in connection to NIU basketball. This has got to be his last year!
