So basically we are getting one additional season of maturity from him...if he takes a RS some time in his career. If he doesn't take a RS in his career then we are losing a year of participation/experience on the practice squad.

Could he enroll at Kish and workout with teammates?

From the 01-scout source itself...

Here is how grey-shirting works:

A player commits to a team that is over-signed.
That player either doesn't go to school in the fall, or enrolls part-time and pays their own way. They are not officially on the team.
In January of the following year, that player enrolls full-time and officially joins the team. They are technically part of the recruiting class for the following year.

Grey-shirting is a way for schools to skate around the recruiting rules. It allows schools to over-sign, regardless of how many prospects they signed the previous year.

Every player has a five year window to play four seasons. That window starts the second a player is enrolled in college full-time or are on scholarship. Since the player is not enrolled full time and is not on scholarship, their "NCAA clock" has not started.

Once they join a team, they still have the full five year window and the ability to red-shirt if they so choose.

While grey-shirting, players are not on the team.

They can not practice or condition with the team. They can not be given any advantage not extended to the normal student body. Grey-shirts are not allowed at team meetings or functions either. For all intents they are essentially, regular students.

So basically we are over signing him but it seems to have been part of his offer up front (instead of finding out after signing day). Maybe if there is an academic casualty or two he will be bumped up to a scholarship immediately.

We've grey-shirted before. Greg Turner was a grey-shirt.

He should take a weight-lifting course at NIU to be an "official" student and have access to equipment and take the rest of his Gen Ed classes at Kish to save $ since he'll have to pay his own way. Plus, he can pad his GPA with the credits he'd transfer in, should "Ace" CC classes.

Also interesting is that means we have 22 solid verbals and a few additional guys.

On our board we are only at 19...so there are 5 or more guys.

Yep, this is cool that he's taking his chances to maybe get a scholly this year if things work out but is fine with grey shirting if he has to. He could just take a free ride to Air Force but has chosen this path to NIU instead.

:sly:

I figured there was precedent, I was just messing around.

Since all the "big boys" are always playing cutesie with the rules.

RE: 2012 Recruiting Thread
So, how many scholarships to we have to give out per year? 25?

Minus the 1 to the walk-on who earned his = 24.

Minus the 21 listed on the Verbal thread (includes the grey shirt Canoy but not Stegar, so net 21) = 3

EDIT: Stegnar is a "preferred walk-on" so # is up to 4.

The grey shirt was offered to Canoy because according to him "NIU was out of Scholarships." So, is it safe to assume that NIU has at least those 4 undisclosed verbals?

Is it just wishful thinking to assume that they could be 3-star or higher rated and being kept under wraps because NIU doesn't want them poached?

NIU can not stop players from Tweeting their choices. They are not being kept under wraps.

Where are all the recruits from the Southeast? Florida, Alabama, Miss, etc. Heck we played a bowl game down there and all we have to show is the one 2* recruit from Florida? Hope there are some additions from that area on Wednesday.

and I won't even mention Texas.

My hope is we still have an outside shot at Charlie Miller from Florida.

Someone on here reported that the two recruits who were visiting last Friday erased all of their tweets, so I'm sure the coaching staff is "encouraging" the young men to be discreet until signing day.

RT @Vandy247: Vanderbilt keeps sights on WR Charlie Miller. One year of HS football, with 4.4 speed. Left Nashville impressed with his visit.

He still lists NIU as "High" interest. But now there are 4 schools, NIU, Vandy, UCF, Minny.
