I was wondering myself. May just be an anticipated residential/student community between the UAB campus and the Railroad Park. Would certainly be a great place for more housing.

I know. This plan looks awesome. I hope all this comes to fruition.

I came to UAB in 2003 and half of this stuff in the picture didn't exist back then. The rate the university is growing at is pretty incredible.

Here's the direct link to the photo.
http://www.uab.edu/plan/concept-of-future-campus

Looks like UAB plans on throwing up lot of new buildings and green space. I'm intrigued by the areas around I-65; it would be nice if we could just pick it up and move it several blocks over. I especially like how the campus expansion is extending toward the Railroad Park developments; connecting the proposed baseball stadium to the new OCS through new developments is going to rejuvenate Birmingham.

They also visited Jacksonville State, Samford to look at the field house, and Appalachian State.

Ullman is designated as a historic building. We're stuck with it until it falls in.

Being on the National Register of Historic Places, in and of itself, doesn't save a building from the wrecking ball. It just makes the wrecking ball really unpopular.

From what I remember it was also the first integrated public school in the city. I don't think it's going anywhere. At least not in Birmingham.

Well where will the tailgate spots be? Will it be in the grassy areas on the west side or the parking lots on the other side of the interstate? Just planning so I know to buy my spot. I guess I'm going to have to go back to season tickets instead of Bticket unless they do something similar to what they do for the Memphis bb game & we buy a ticket for x credits. I don't mind it at all after all this time as I'm just glad I finally have that problem to consider 02-13-banana03-cloud903-drunk04-cheers04-bow04-rock

I was wondering that myself. Right by I-65 would make for a noisy tailgate. Maybe there could be additional space across 12th street, in the grassy areas between whatever those buildings are going to be.

Also notice now they have updated the map with the new proposed interstate changes with additional on off ramps off of I-65. At the campus town hall meetings they mentioned that changes were coming with that respect but the Alabama DOT didn't want to reveal them for a few reasons. Also on the previous version and on this version, if you can zoom in near the interstate 65 where 5th Ave South was going under it, becomes a walkway to parking on the other side of the interstate.

Also interesting to see actual location of the proposed city baseball stadium.

You may be right, and it's bound to be a sticky wicket either way, but UAB has proven it isn't above pissing people off and strong-arming something through if they want it.

Of course, looking at the map, they may be building around it in every direction and leave it. If they did that, I'd hope they'd put it to some useful purpose. Last time I saw the inside of it, it was a two-story, red brick, historically significant junk closet.

Are they moving the softball field to be next to the stadium?

Well I think they renovated it somewhat and put some office space in there. As long as the basic structure is solid, they can always use some of the additional space. Eventually once its so forgotten about and they need to use that specific space for something, then they will take the pr hit and do it, until then it will stay around and be used for something non vital.

There appears to be a lot of parking on the otherside of the interstate from the new stadium. Is this new or existing. I imagine that will be areas for tailgating.

Any speculation on if there will be a track around the stadium? I'm hoping there isn't so the stands can be as close as possible to the field to make it nice and loud for the visiting team.

If the practice fields are untouched then I don't see a need for a track in the new stadium.

I absolutely agree. We don't need a track around the field.

I wonder if UAB will have a chance of hosting the high school football championships once in a while.

Adding exits to the interstate - I imagine many a driver will be cursing UAB and their damned new stadium during rush hour when they start that construction project.
