Yeah, even if Doeren turns out to be great, we can't afford to pay him like a big 10 coach....which is why we lost our last coach. And even if we could afford to pay someone like that, why wouldn't they want to coach in a conference with a realistic shot of being in the BCS?

It's one variable which $eparate$ the giant$ from pretender$ ie , $ALARIE$ AND PERK$ of coaches.

It's most always about money or our lack of it.

But coaching stability at the BCS schools isn't even as common as it used to be. For example, look at what happened to Stanford this year.

Call me what you want. But NIU hasn't won a MAC championship in 26 years. Your stadium needs major improvements. You dont have an indoor. Your coach just left. Your bowl record is bad. Your other non revenue sports as a group are always near the bottom of the MAC You get horrible attendance for mens and womens basketball games Go ahead and say all the bad things you want about Toledo. I am just saying you have a long way to go. I didn't say it couldn't be done.

What does the other sports argument have to do with Boise State? And getting highly ranked in football?

RE: "The Boise State of the Midwest" ....Why not?
EVERY single time NIU football tastes a whiff of success the nutjobs on this site proclaim...

A. NIU is too good for the MAC and should seek better conference affiliation
B. NIU is on par with nationally recognized program this or that

Good grief. It's nice to be amped up about NIU football. But comparing the potential to that of Boise State?!? C'mon. Unlike the MAC, Boise State has the ability and werewithal to pay coaching salary of a $1 million plus. After years of not paying Joe Novak jack squat NIU has finally moved up to the upper reaches of salary in the conferece. Which tops out in the $350 th range.

Salary isn't everything, but is nevertheless vivid example of football priority and financial resource commitment that some schools have relative to MAC schools. It is why the best NIU can hope for is to build to somehow build to consistent year over year success while perpetually living with the dilemma of losing the head football coach to greener pastures. But like I've said many times before, I'll take only a few years of Kill or Doeren over a lifetime of a middling dope of a coach. Because only a few years of a Kill or Doeren type means then that NIU football is successful on the football field and otherwise.

Boise State comparison? God no. Why o' why can't some of you doorknobs and drool monkeys live in the immediate and accept NIU football for what it is and for what it can be. This isn't the friggin BCS and this isn't a friggin "sports first" mid major ala Marshall or Central Florida. THis is NIU, a regional public arrow school doing its damndest to be successful in a quality mid-major conference with like-minded schools.

Just an FYI, I didn't see anyone say either of those in this thread.

500 is not great but respectable And I appreciate you guys having a great season. But that is just one small step to becoming the Boise state of the Midwest.

Well, it would certainly helped if we were playing UTEP and FIU in our bowl games rather than TCU, USF, and Fresno St.

USF was a good but not great team in 2009. Fresno got beat 51-0 by Boise State.

Don't talk. You lost to FIU in a virtual home game.

No apologies or excuses for the FIU loss. Rockets made big improvements
in 2010. Rivals.com just moved the recruiting class to #1 in the MAC.
UT is moving in the right direction.

sorry, but a recruiting class doesn't prove much. Just an FYI, Toledo had the #1 and #2 classes in the MAC in 2007 and 2008 (most of the prominent players of this year's team) and NIU was very close to last. We saw the talent difference.

Now, they should improve from last year based on returning players, but it's not like Toledo's recruiting classes have been the issue the last 4 or 5 years.

Scout had UT about #3 or 4 in '07 and '08.
It's a big difference when you get a few 3 star players that have only mid-major offers and then start getting players that are Top 50 by position nationally,Top 250 players in the nation, and have multiple BCS offers. The level of talent in Beckman' last 2 classes and discipline he's brought to the program on and off the field have really began to pay off.

But Rivals was mentioned earlier, hence why I looked that up...I don't know how you can say the last 2 recruiting classes have begun to pay off?

What have the players just signed today done? Will they? very good chance probably, but to say it has payed off is somewhat silly

Uh, okay? We also blew out Fresno.

Definitely a good win for the Huskies and the MAC. I watched every minute and knew NIU was better. Just not one of Pat Hill's better teams and it wouldn't have made a difference if NIU had them, '05 UTEP, or '10 FIU.

Today's Signing Class has already brought the Rocket's some positive national recognition. I expect they will play an integral part in the 2011 UT FB season.
