You sound like Glenn Beck then, no reason to reference something that you don't believe to be a factor.

I'm not saying he was born in Kenya.. I'm just saying there's a lot of evidence that he was and a lot of people believe it.

haha...i never said it was not a factor, it most certainly is, though perhaps not the sole factor.

You are way too picky..

Well clearly it was a factor. They were working out, that's a given, it's the reaction of whatever they were using while working out that is the problem.

+1

If they are all lineman maybe but bet they play all positions. The activity induced symptons because of things they were taking. Not a coincidence

Whether it's supplements (probably) or illiegal drugs (possibly), something caused those kids' kidneys to shut down due to an overly strenuous workout.

They were hanging by a thread before the workout program. The conditioning just put them over the edge.

You don't know if it's supplements. I read somewhere (don't have a link) one player tweeted he had never seen so much vomit in his life and another player complained that he couldn't walk afterwards. They had to do 100 reps of squats within a certain time frame... that's crazy.

RE: What the hell is going on in Iowa?
Plenty of kids have thrown up from workouts before. Hell that happens at a lot of high schools. That's not out of the norm, you don't have that many kids end up in the hospital from working out without there being a second part to it.

Might not be supplements, maybe they all ate bad food together before practice that day, who knows, but I cannot believe for a second it was from just working out. To suggest as much is laughable in my opinion.

They were hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a very serious condition caused by working out waaaaay too hard. Muscle tissue (myoglogin) is destroyed and ends up in the blood stream. The kidneys try to filter it out (filtering the blood is what kidneys do), get clogged up, which can lead to kidney failure, which can kill you.

For that many people to be pushed that far is inexcusable.

This is a VERY serious situation. I would think Kirk Ferentz has a lot of explaining to do. Even though I like Ferentz, to me this is grounds for dismissal as head football coach. Heads should be rolling for this.

I took this comment as a grain of salt earlier because I figured Iowa's class was already full and it's a pretty prominent football program. As more information comes out, and coupled with the recent drug busts surrounding the team, I'd be surprised if parents or high school coaches of their verbals aren't telling the verbals to reconsider. Send Doeren after their verbals pronto.

By all reports the 13 players hospitalized aren't guilty of taking performance enhancing drugs or any questionable supplements. Rather as it was pointed out previous they succumbed to muscle degeneration and blood poisoning that comes from working out insanely too hard.

This smells like a case of a weight room regiment gone horribly wrong. Kirk Ferentz and the head trainer should be in very hot water. IN fact, they both should be fired. And anybody else who was culpable for putting these student athletes in such harm's way. Pressure to be a workout nazi might have killed some of these kids.

I don't know if your drug comment is directed at me or not, but I'm talking about the drug dealing and whatever else was going on in mid December

It is just hard to believe that 13 kids would have the same medical issue on the same day. I could see 2 today , 3 tomorrow, and so on but 13 on one day? creatine or some other supplement had a hand in this. Yes, the work out was gruelling too but something in their system cause this type of reaction.

Exactly Klake. A dozen kids getting sick with the same thing? Something happened here, maybe supplements, maybe illegal drugs, maybe just bad food for all I know, maybe someone poisoned their water, who knows? I do know though, that it is impossible to believe it was due only to the workouts.

Kirk Frentz should be kissing Jay Cutler's butt, because this situation is receiving very little attention in the press...at least in the Chicagoland area.

Kirk Ferentz should be and will get fired over this. Ditto the strength and conditioning people. I can imagine a slew of lawsuits are going to be filed as well.

My thoughts are with the athletes and their families.

The Big Ten website doesn't mention anything about it. Imagine that!

They still have links to articles about the Ohio State, Illinois, and Iowa bowl games. Funny they picked those particular bowl games to mention on the front page.

Doubt Ferentz gets the axe, although would be an easy way to get out of that big contract without any questions. I imagine S&C coaches will take the fall for this one, Ferentz can say he was out recruiting.

That being said, if you're a Big 10 caliber football player, is there a Big 10 program you don't choose over Iowa right now? I imagine Coach Kill and Minnesota will benefit from this.
