commuter vs. non-commuter school is more about campus culture than actual beds on campus. You can be a commuter school where everyone lives in dorms and vice-versa.

Ahh...I just remembered this about ECU, and it wasnt this way when I went there (before online classes)...they have about 5,000 or so in the distance learning program, which actually skews the numbers. The campus setting is residential, but the distance learning is non-residential, so I guess it pushes it over to that category now.

Makes more sense.

I agree about the campus culture, that's what I posted above that the best way to determine this is to visit the school, preferably having a current student as your host and you'll find out quickly if there is a 'commuter culture' or a 'traditional college feel' in the school's area

Given the way that the negotiations between BCOM and Rice ended I can't see that. Baylor University apparently still has some sway. IIRC they appoint a number of members of the board of BCOM. Things may change in a generation or more, but nothing will happen before then.

Lol, I actually live near NAS Cecil Field... I can tell the girls at the Blue Angel for ya if you would like...

I got my undergrad (BSME) from UNF. UNF didn't offer a Master in Mechanical Engineering at the time so I decided to go to UCF since it was mostly online. Unfortunately this last class I have to take I have to drive down every monday and attend class from 4pm-7:45pm and then drive back. Sucks but I'm finished after this semester... Plus my brother-in-law is a "House Dad" at one of the Frat houses, so I have parking and overnight accomodations if needed.

% of beds compaired to the enrollment. It's an outdate system to rate schools this way. For ECU, IMO isn't a "commuter school" we have many students that stay in apartments around town and many of them are on the bus routes, we do have plans to add more dorms but, we are nearly maxed out on space. We will need to buy more land. But, with the budget cuts in NC right now that ain't happening anytime soon. We could look at what NCSU has done partner with a private developer and have them build housing and rent it for us, we invest little money in this and get to count the beds.

I mean no disrespect to the OP or any others who have contributed to this thread, but these aspects are of little or no concern to me in choosing a potential conference mate.

I care that the athletics programs are supported by the school and community, and that the athletic teams can be competitive within our conference.

Doctors need to go to medical school, lawyers need to go to law school, and ditch diggers need to go to shovel class. We need doctors. we need lawyers, and we need ditch diggers. I really don't care that School A is more selective than School B. Most the players we cheer for probably wouldn't (under normal circumstances) be accepted to these more selective schools anyway, just highlighting the hypocrisy.

No worries...but yes, some Presidents do take in account one's academic reputation/standing in regards to past expansion matters in various conferences....and while its obviously not the most important factor or maybe not the 4th most important factor...one's academic standing does play a minor role in SOME decisions.

Im a current ucf student, and can tell you that we have a shuttle service that is built into the tuition that picks students up from non affiliated apartment complexes within 2-3 miles of the university. There are currently 11 different routes and most of them stop at more than one complex. I think only 1 Pegasus Pointe is directly affiliated with UCF.

ULDave, I agree totally, but the confrence big wigs do care. Doesn't matter what you or I think. A 4 year degree is very important in today's word. Most Universities are very good schools, it's crazy to me that school that don't get as much grant money as others or have as many beds for students as others, get such a bad rap. There are many factors that affect schools, for example: ECU and UNC have med schools, we are both public schools and have to fight each other for funds. UNC has many law makers own their side for years slowing our progress. Today we have more "friends" in the capital. Now, the main issue is the economy and the state budget problems.
