Matt Griggs from Cincinnati, Ohio, writes: Strength of schedule aside how good or how improved do you think the Cincinnati Bearcats are this year?
Brennan: It's a little bit funny that Cincinnati seems to be having its best season under Mick Cronin the year after star-studded recruit Lance Stephenson left after his freshman year to (perhaps prematurely) pursue his NBA career. The Bearcats don't seem to need "Born Ready" after all. Yancy Gates has been playing well, especially on the glass, Ibrahima Thomas has been a beast on the offensive boards, and Cronin's frontcourt has been surrounded by efficient scorers in Dion Dixon, Cashmere Wright, Rashad Bishop. Even freshman Sean Kilpatrick, who shoots well and has the benefit of a strong Irish name to boot, has made solid contributions.
How much better are the Bearcats than last year? With such an easy, Ohio-oriented schedule, it's hard to say. It should be noted, however, that Cincinnati isn't just squeaking by nonconference opponents. The Bearcats have been blowing most of them away. In the meantime, they've racked up a pretty impressive efficiency profile, which currently ranks them at No. 26 in the nation, a major improvement over last year's mid-70s effort. That ranking isn't the be-all, end-all, but it aligns pretty well with the improvement viewers of the Bearcats have seen this far. It'll be interesting to see how this team holds up in Big 12 play.
Cant wait to see how we do in this new conference......
