Thanks Ozoner, I was nearly sure he wasn't but Reghi on "All bets are off today" kept saying the Kellogg that was playing had transferred from Providence. He also never made any mention of there being two Kellogg brothers, he seemed to be very uninformed on the matter. It really is a shame that they would have someone on TV as a MAC "expert" that is apparently not well informed or up to date.

Even coaches Ford and Dambrot claimed not to favor it either, as in Dave's article in the Record-Courier. I would much rather have the game somewhat further into conference play, when standings are starting to settle, and games have that much more significance. Here's hoping for a great game Saturday, and GO FLASHES!!!
As much as I hate opening with the rivalry, I also hate ending the season with it. Last year is the prime example. We beat Akron (YAY!) In 3 days the team and fans have to come down off the high, and deal with the MAC-T. The rivalry would be just as intense a week earlier, and opening conf play does not benefit anyone either.
I always said both univesities could really sell this game better. Especially when we had superstar NBA players showing up. There is no reason every sportsfan in CAK should not make an attempt to go to this game.
As for y'all, I hate this game now that I live in NC. Enjoy this everyone, whichever team you are pulling for. Don't act like idiots.

RE: Kent State vs. Akron
Agree Axeme! I hated when they went to divisions, and hated it even more when in 2000 they decided that a division winner could be no lower than the #2 seed. They have to have divisions in football, to have the MAC championship, but it doesn't work for basketball. Play everyone once, and rotate the teams you play twice, with the exception of a designated rival game (BG-Toledo, Kent State -Akron, OU-Miami, etc.) that you always play twice. Or, just go to a double-round robin that some coaches would prefer.
By the way, I just checked. There has been no change in Guyton's court status as of a few minutes ago. The preliminary hearing is still scheduled for the morning of the 14th - a week from now.

Speaking of Kent State's shooting woes, I note that Michael Shull, a junior starter on last year's Jackson state championship team that featured Henninger and Egner, is leading Stark County in scoring @ 22.2 ppg. He's an ootside shooter that plays the 1 and the 2, and hit 40.3% last year from the three point line. Of course (1) he's only 5'11" and (2) I haven't seen him play this year so I really don't know if he's D I material.

One bonus of playing the game now is as the Carducci article mentions the Rootards are not back from winter break. Hope to see a good Kent crowd there. Catch you at our normal spot.

Saw him play twice last year. He is a great high school player and will likely be a great D2, D3 or NAIA player. At 5'11 not many schools are going to bite on shooting guard that size and i dont think he has the quickness to play the point full time. So in short dont think he could play at the MAC level.

RE: Kent State vs. Akron
At least I can see some logic in having Kent State and Akron playing the last game of the season, although I think it is a bad idea. The idea of having rivals play the last game, no matter the sport, dates back to before there was a post-regular season for so many teams. They should play near the end, say the next-to-the last game, or preferably even a little earlier. But I see NO logic in their opening the regular MAC season. The only possible reason I can see is that the MAC feels that a rival game is more likely to have a nice draw even with school not yet back in session. I mean, an Akron - EMU game, for example, with the students not yet back in school would draw an embarrassing low crowd.

ksu 315, I last saw him in the state championship game and my impression at the time, even though I of course wasn't concentrating on him, was the same as yours. I really would like to see Kent State find some guys that can flat-out put the ball in the damned hole, though. I have nothing against size, speed, quickness, "athleticism" and all that. Nothing at all. But it seems to me that unless a team has guys that can shoot it, all that other stuff just goes to waste, and the games can become very frustrating for the fans.

I saw the line today has Akron favored by 4. I'm sure at least 1 of those points has the location of the game.... Little does Vegas know.

We have a game at the half. I like that. Kent is playing solid defense, I like that. The problem remains no offensive production out of anybody in the paint or on the block outside of Greene (who is struggling)...I don't like that. We shall see...

This is garbage! a 9 point lead lost to a 2 point lead. Sounds like an utterly bad game on both ends.
