Since this was your real opinion, why dress it up?

Other opinions vary.

Even your original post did not seem that constructive because you appeared ready to burst if everyone else did not agree with you that the coaches suck right now.

Your opinion- as credible as any other- is that right now our kids are not being coached very well.

That was worthy of another thread.

Given the consensus (I hope it's a consensus) that our game coaching hasn't been stellar (okay I said it sucks ... my opinion), I wanted to point out Pastner is evidently working hard in games ... you can see it. With that in mind, I figured that a possible explanation was that our more experienced assistant coaches were not helping him out as much as they could be.

And I posed it as a question, rather than an assumption. Some people made an effort to answer it, other people just had the same snide, defensive comments they always have to anyone who says anything that could possibly be construed as negative about the team. They think the coaches read the board and that their feelings might be hurt. Get real people, this board is not as powerful as you want to believe. It's a discussion. Some people want to make it an argument.

I don't think this board has any power whatsoever. I don't think the coaches read it. I don't think they'd care if they did. Therefore, I don't see the point.

the thing is, Paz is already in a tuff situation with the whole age/experience thing. I'm not sure that having one of the 'more experienced' coaches stepping in would be such a great thing if it cuts into the respect the team has for the head coach. Not saying it would or does, just hypothesising

Yawn.

You are guilty of...whining when the same style of criticism is aimed at you as you aim at the coaches.

Seems to be nothing wrong with thinking the coaches have been sub par. But then it looks like anyone that disagrees with that (and I may or may not) makes you argumentative- as though they could not possibly think differently.

This was not a lead in to a discussion but a lead in so you could argue more.

Y- Poster A sucks.

well, just to chime in to what mphsfan and covington have said, I sit in the upper deck center when I'm in town, and on my couch in Illinois the rest of the time, and in both cases I can see the same thing, though limited in the latter case by camera angles.

I see assistants talking to players on the bench in the chair that is otherwise empty, and I see assistants talking to players as they come in for a time out, before the assistants gather with Pastner, and then he goes in to talk to the team.

i think he just wanted to talk about topic without getting crucified and did so unsuccessfully, maybe the wrong approach?

Personally, I thought the coaching for last nights game, regardless of the outcome and score, was the best I've seen from JP so far. The strategy and in game adjustments were spot on imo

Agreed. I always see the 'hot seat' open when a player is yanked for a mistake. They get a good talking to, then move on down the bench.

Yeah, I'm sorry ... I've really flown off the handle in this thread ... there's gotta be an anger management program in this city that will accept me.

Seriously, I'm not trying to be an instigator. I occasionally have strong opinions that people object to, and sometimes those opinions can be wrong. Maybe this is one of those rare cases. I don't go around trying to pick fights, though, except with UAB fans once upon a time.

You, from what I've seen, do nothing but instigate. A lot of the time I agree with you and think it's funny, but nonetheless one of your main uses for this board is to get under people's skin. Doesn't really bother me, and it's occasionally amusing, but don't be calling the kettle black.

(12-21-2010 03:01 PM)Felonious Wrote:  Before people start with the "You have no idea how hard they work" business, let me first say that my observations are based entirely on the eye test. Second, every D-I coaching staff works hard relative to most people. The important thing is how hard they work relative to other coaching staffs. And more important than how hard they work is how well they coach and connect with the players.

Which leads me to my question: is it just me or do they not seem to be actually interacting with players during games? Every time a player gets yanked for a bad turnover or silly foul, the coaching staff just watches him go by to his place on the bench. Maybe they'll offer an encouraging high-five. Beyond that, they all just keep watching the game, albeit intently. You'd think they'd crouch next to the player or sit him down next to them and get in his ear. I'm not talking Bobby Knight head butts or anything, just some solid teaching and pep talks.

Basically, as much as the head coach is gonna get the blame for what some people perceive to be bad coaching, you can't deny that Pastner is constantly on his feet yelling at the players in the game. He seems to be teaching and motivating on the court. From where I sit (right across from our bench), it doesn't look like the assistants are putting in a whole lot of energy during games.

No, I have not been to practices. I have not been in the locker room for halftime or post-game talks. All I can speak on is what I see.
Glad you were able to somehow get your "our game coaching sucks" comment in, I've been missing a good "we suck" for a few days. Thanks for filling the void.

At least there are now 9 schools who have basketball coaches whose "game coaching sucks" worse than ours.

After reviewing your post I found only one question in it:

"Which leads me to my question: is it just me or do they not seem to be actually interacting with players during games?"

The answer to your question: yes it is just you!

Have a Willie Becton Good Day sir!

No, that level is during football season.

These are creampuff level complaints toward the BB program and coaching style. IT is just in vogue to dog Pastner since Chia Pet Wolken made a big deal about the assistants the other day.

9-1 is NOT perfection, and THAT is the standard for TIGER BB.

Mphsfan and covingtontiger countered the OP properly with their unimpeded courtside observations. Case closed...until the next rant.

Well, when folks use "suck" to describe our team, players, or coaches, I'll usually react.

"Game coaching sucks" is "toxic" in itself.

this place is toxic

So, if I disagree with the OP, may I state that, or am I being toxic? What if I consider the original post toxic, does the toxicity double if I answer in opposition, of do they cancel each other out? Is it being toxic if I feel the OP is wrong and I wish to defend the program, or is that considered toxic? I don't want to be toxic, but it seems I can't help it.

I can't keep up with it anymore.
