As of this moment, varrious sources report 239 R, 183 D, and 13 still counting or too-close-to-call. Even if all of the not-yet-called races break for the Democrats, 239 GOPs would still be their best showing since 1946.

The next Speaker of the House, John Boehner of Ohio, made a good impression with his speech last night.

I do not remember what source I was relying on when I made my previous post on this thread. But it has to be said that the Democrats have done amazingly well on those 13 races that were "undecided" the morning after Election Day. It looks like 9 or 10 of them will be reclaimed by the Democrats, resulting in a new partisan division for the House of either 243-192 or 242-193 in the GOP's favor.

When do we hear the results of GTS's pick 'em contest?

Good question, doc. I looked for that thread and couldn't find it (I am sure I just overlooked it).

Anyway, just this evening (Monday) a Democrat incumbent in South Texas (Corpus/Brownsville) conceded to his GOP opponent, a man with the very non-South-Texan-sounding name of Blake Farenthold.

The overall partisan division is still on track for either 242-193 or 243-192. Really, there is only one district with any serious suspense, and that is the NY-01 district on the eastern end of Long Island. Last I heard the Democrat incumbent led by less than Twenty (20) votes, with several thousand absentees, etc., yet to be counted.

When all the races are decided.

RE: GOP's best result in US House since at least 1946
Well, the last US House race -- New York #1 on the eastern end of Long Island -- has now been decided in favor the incumbent Democrat. Bringing the total for the new Congress in January to 242 Republicans and 193 Democrats. As I said in an earlier post, that is the best partisan showing in the House of Representatives for the GOP in a national election sixty-four years -- since the election of November 1946.

It is remarkable that of the 13 House races undecided as of the morning after Election Day, 10 of them broke in the Democrats' favor. I haven't counted up all the "overtime" races for Senate/Governor, etc., but just offhand I can think of the Senate race in Washington, the Governor race in Minnesota, the state-Attorney-General race in California. The Democrats won all three of those, too. Curious how these things work out.
