They are being eclipsed on the national stage by UCONN. I'm sure it would be news to any Clemson fan that they have a "rivalry" with BC.
If Big East fans have an "obsession" with BC, then I guess we have alot of obsessions... if discussing a topic is an "obsession", that is. How long has it been since Penn State went to the Big 10? How long was it that Joe Pa discussed an Eastern league that never happened - 30 years ago? And yet those topics still come up. Miami, and their pitiful fan support and general decline, is a topic that comes up from time to time... I guess we're still obsessed with Miami, too.
Most Big East fans (especially those who were previously in the league with BC) will continue to be amused by BC's ongoing irrelevance, and the fact that they are collectively gnashing their teeth in response to UCONN's ongoing rise as a program - even as they pretend that it doesn't bother them in the slightest.
You know, I don't know a single BC fan that thinks the ACC "looks down" on them. That's a narrative that you guys seem to have invented. When I travel to away games at ACC vevues - and I have been to a bunch of them - I have been treated extremely well. A far cry, I might add, from the way I was treated at BE venues in 2003 and 2004. You will hear the same from most BC fans. As far as being slighted in the bowls - that has nothing to do with the ACC and everything to do with the bowls. Think BC is alone in this?? Just ask Maryland how they like their bowl selecton this year. They are going to the Military Bowl, about 20 miles from their campus; playing ECU. Other ACC teams that finished below them are going to better bowls. They are not happy and it has nothing to do with the ACC.
The fact is northern teams don't travel as well as other teams - and that goes for Pitt, SU, and Uconn, Maryland, as well as BC. (BTW, if Uconn lost against USF, do you think they would have gone to the #1 non-BCS BE bowl??)
Re: Clemson, the fact is that BC IS developing a rivalry with them. You can ask the 7-8,000 fans that make the trip to Chestnut Hill every two years. Several of them are "regulars" at my tailgate when Clemson travels to Chestnut Hill. Are we the same kind of rival as South Carolina? Of course not! But we are a game that many of them circle on their calendars. Most of our games with them (last year notwithstanding) have been close, hard fought contests usually decided in the last minute. Both Alumni groups now have a trophy which is passed to the winners of each game. No fanbase in the country was more active and supportive of Mark H's incredible battle with cancer than Clemson. Again, a rivalry equal to South Carolina? No - but give it another 10 years and we shall see.
Husky, SU has not resumed playing BC as some kind of "favor" to BC. I am sure you know that. SU and BC are playing each other beacuse it is in both schools' interests to do so. SU was the one real rival BC had in the east. BC has played SU more times than any other school except for Holy Cross (and that series ended in 1986). For SU, if the ACC were ever to expand in the future, they will be in a good position for consideration as they already have an establised rival within the ACC.
Regarding your comments about BC becoming irrelevant - I think BC fans are amused by these kind of statements. Let's be honest, the track record for most of you guys is not that good regarding your predictions about BC; considering that most BE fans predicted BC would never be more than a bottomfeeder in the ACC and Matt Ryan was an overrated stiff who was far behind the Louisville QB (Brian Brohme) and would be a bust in the NFL. How did those predictions work out?
Bottom line for BC, it has achieved its goals of being in an all-sports conference that is attractive, stable, and provides financial security. Its fan base - especially the big donors - are very pleased with the move. Let me ask you, if the ACC decided tomorrow to expand to 14 teams - how many BE teams would try to replicate BC's "awful mistake"??
