ODU SOCCER KNOCKS OFF VIRGINIA
ODU KNOCKS OFF VIRGINIA, 1-0, IN 1st ROUND OF THE NCAA MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Alex Vaughan scored in the 63rd minute to give Old Dominion University a 1-0 lead and goalkeeper Evan Newton made it stand as the soccer Monarchs knocked off defending national champion Virginia Thursday night in Charlottesville.

On the game-winner, Chris Harmon sent a through ball to Vaughan who struck it with his left foot into the back of the net from 10 yards out.

For Vaughan, it was his fourth goal of the year and Harmon’s third assist of the season.

The Cavaliers outshot ODU 7-1 in the first half, but only one shot was on goal and that was turned aside by Newton.

“It was a very hard fought game in a tough place to play, but exactly what we expected,” ODU head coach Alan Dawson said. “We did a great job as a young team, especially in the second half. We gave a couragious effort and got the win in the end.”
