RE: New Coach.....
Just curious why everyone is high on this Cignetti? If you look at his 20+ year coaching resume he has primarily coached Qb's, WR's and TE's and been a recruiting coordinator. He has never been an O or D coordinator. Yes he was part of a national championship and comes with an endorsement from Saban but i hate to say it this is eerily similar to the Pete Cordelli mistake who came from Lou Holtz's recommendation.

I hope JN is right here. Our neighbors hired a coach from ND with no O or D coordinator experience and so far that has been a debacle.

RE: New Coach.....
I don't like to read into things that aren't necessarily pertinent. Cordelli was a bad hire because he was a lousy coach. It doesn't mean that all coaches with similar backgrounds will be lousy head coaches. I don't think Cordelli or the Akron coach would be better just because they had a season or two as OC or DC. You have the right temperament for the job or you don't.

That is what our AD's job is here: to sort through the superficiality of a resume (all of which make the candidates look impressive) and figure out who actually can make this work. It is not easy. Interviews are tricky. Many people know what to say in an interview. A good interviewer has to know how to get deeper into who the person really is. For the first in a a very long time, I have faith that our AD is the man to do this for our football program.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I just find it curious KSU is apparently not considering anyone with previous successful head coaching experience.

RE: New Coach.....
When was the last time a MAC school hired a successful head coach from someplace else other than lower div.? Is an FCS coach more desirable than a top BCS program assistant? Successful BCS program coaches don't move to the MAC. (And I don't want to get into the argument about whether or not Solich was successful at Nebraska. They obviously didn't think so. He's an exception anyway due to age and situation. Generally, the MAC has not been kind to retreads who were fired from BCS HC jobs. Curse you, Dick Crum!)

Coach Crum cured us of re- tread coaches.

While we don’t know as much about our search as we will next week, there are two things already reported different about our search than Akron’s:

1. Neilsen and Kleinlein had a list of about 12 deep and have (reportedly) interviewed 3 or 4 candidates. Neither grabbed an old buddy who was out of a job and looked no further.

2. Outside of Restkis, the most likely candidates are from Alabama and Ohio State. As an ND fan, I can admit there is no comparison to the 2009 Irish and the success of either of these programs. If we’re going to lean into anyone, lean into a coach from a championship caliber program.

Frankly, if it’s coming down to Cignetti, Hazell and Restkis, I don’t see a bad choice among the three.

That's not what I meant. I was referring to guys who had been proven winners at D-IAA (okay, FCS) or D-II. For example Brian Kelly (Grand Valley to Central Michigan), Jerry Kill (Southern Illinois to NIU), Jim Harkema (Grand Valley to Eastern Michigan).

RE: New Coach.....
Given how quickly semi-successful MAC coaches are moving up to BCS schools, I would think that a good assistant at a BCS school would see the Kent job as a launching pad to bigger and better things if he can be moderately successful (a la Kill and Haywood). Maybe a faster path than being a successful assistant in a good program.

That said, I would prefer to see a coach with head coaching experience (a la what MajorHoople suggests), but I don't see this happening. This is a HUGE test of JN as it is the one thing that needs fixing within the Kent athletics programs.

RE: New Coach.....
Appears Testicle Tech going lower-level head coach route - word is they're hiring Pete Lembo, who's been header at Elon (NC) and Lehigh.

The impression I get from what I have read, is that Mullen is not among the final three for the job. The way it sounds, he appears to be a clone of Coach Martin, anyway. Time for a different direction.05-stirthepot
