So the A-sun is also a soccer deathtrap...
Well not that many of you care, myself included, but the NCAA bracket just came out for soccer. ETSU, champions of the mighty A-Sun conference, get sent to Charleston for the opening round. Charleston has 5 fewer wins than the bucs and finished 3rd in the SoCon, yet they get the home game! That stings! On top of this the winner of this thrilling match gets the privilege to play the undefeated and #1 ranked Louisville Cardinals.

So it seems that the A-Sun not only sucks for basketball when it comes to getting favorable seeds, but even precious soccer gets screwed at tourney time. It's ok though. I'm sure that sustained success in soccer will get us into a better conference in no time.

Yet they may win the first round game, which would give Mullins something to brag about

Is it still considered bragging when no one is listening?

I just think the irony of being matched up against the 3rd place team in the SoCon as the A-Sun champion is priceless. We hear so much from the ETSU talking heads about how the SoCon is no better than the A-Sun and yet the NCAA consistently proves that to be inaccurate by the way the give better seeds to SoCon teams in just about every sport.

Agree with everything you're saying, but as long as we're playing it, I'd rather win than not, and as long as we have to be in the ASuck, I'd rather win it than not.

I'm not pulling against them, mine is more a stance of apathy. Whether they lose in the first round or make it to the final I'm really not going to pay it any attention. I like soccer and ETSU having soccer is not a bad thing. It's been said many times before though, the whole way ETSU went about getting soccer is the problem. Until those wrongs are righted you will always have dissidence amongst the fan base win or lose.

My point with this thread is not to demean the players. They seem like a good bunch and I really respect Calabrese. The point is to take a moment to laugh in the face of Dave Mullins and his band of losers that act like we fans should be pumped about the A-Sun. Simply appreciate the irony of the situation and ever expanding evidence of their failures. This is the only place it will be mentioned.

Consider this: would you rather be ETSU, and have just clinched an NCAA bid in men's soccer by winning the ASun, or Georgia State, playing football at Alabama on Thursday?

Neither. If we were playing football against Bama Saturday in Alabama, we would get blown out in a game that would not be on TV and that I could not go watch. Why would this excite me?

Georgia State all the way. They are going to get stomped but they're going to a big 'ol check and tons of exposure. Even if they set a record for worst loss ever they will get more publicity out of it than will this year's soccer national champion. The game is nationally televised with ESPN's #1 crew calling the game. (Fowler, Herbstreit, and the lovely Ms. Andrews) You will hear Georgia State's name on sportscenter and other national media all week. They will be in the public's and their alumnus's consciousness this week as well.

ETSU meanwhile is completely irrelevant nationally and in the consciousness of an ever decreasing amount of people even locally. If they win Thursday, the JC press and maybe the Bristol HC will be the only media outlets to report on it. It's not making sportscenter. It's probably not even making the Elizabethton Star.

Georgia State will take the field in front of 100,000 people in the stadium and potentially hundreds of thousands watching on TV across the country on Thursday. ETSU will take the field in front of a few hundred people at a tiny little stadium and maybe two-dozen people watching on A-SunTV and be remembered as the school that used to be in the SoCon.

Which would you choose?

Was not aware that the game would be televised. In this case, of course Georgia State. Not sure why ESPN would cover this game, but if they are then you are correct regarding the coverage.

The money is more important than the coverage though

Pretty sure Bill Curry has some strings with ESPN somehow. They've been covering the "birth" of GSU's program since it was announced. I think they were even the cover for this years college preview on espn magazine.

Check out this preview from GSU's website. Curry talks about having ESPN cover the game. He says he's not sure why they would show it but he's happy they are.

They were on the cover of ESPN the magazine's football preview issue, with a big story inside. ESPN is doing the game Thursday, and there are ads on for the game right now - in fact, seeing one is what prompted my question in the first place. They've also been on CSS 3 times this year; ETSU hoops doesn't even get on CSS 3 times a year. Their first game drew 30,000 to the Georgia Dome, and here's a quote from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from the Nov. 5 paper:

"Before the season, athletic director Cheryl Levick had hoped to average 10,000 per game -- 5,000 season-ticket holders and 5,000 students -- which would enable the department to break even on its operating costs of the Georgia Dome. Georgia State has averaged 17,094 in six home dates. Even without the 30,237 that attended the Sept. 2 opener against Shorter, the average would be 14,465."

http://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-state/...24597.html

I'm not doing the research, but I would be shocked if ETSU soccer has been on regional or even local TV 3 times this year, and there's no way they've been on a prime-time game on ESPN this year. ETSU-07 posted attendance statistics for ETSU soccer in another thread:

"ETSU Home Soccer Average Attendance (-UNC game): 370
ETSU vs UNC: 1350"

http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=46...id=5878108

Yeah, I know who I'd rather be.

Yeah, I know who I'd rather be.

Yeah if we are lucky we might be on CSS twice this season. The final for sure and maybe semi-finals of the Cancun tourney will get on one of the ESPN networks. We would of course have to win a few games to have a chance and that seems in doubt. Only other hope is to be in the A-sun final.

It was never commonplace, but I can remember ESPN picking up some of the bigger SoCon regular season games. The last I can remember was my freshman year playing Chattanooga on the road. Think we lost, but it was cool seeing us on the "worldwide leader".

On a side note, that was a tough season but it was way more interesting being a student with SoCon teams coming into the dome that my last three years there with the a-sun teams. We actually had students standing up, clapping, and heck, we even yelled a little. Now you watch the highlights and the students look like they are at a funeral. It doesn't seem like Buc Wild even tries anymore. So sad.
