No matter how much you hate Cal and Kentucky, you can't deny quality when you see it.

Yes, he really cherishes education, so much so that I bet he stays at Kentucky for the full four years before going Pro, for the second time.

I really haven't kept up, so tell me what is different between this and Jeremy Bloom playing football at Colorado or Ricky Williams playing simultaneously for Texas and the Phillies organization.

I don't know about Bloom but with Williams it was the fact that it was two different sports. He could not have played college baseball. There have been numerous instances of that over the years.

You can't be a professional in the sport you want to participate in...

You can be pro in baseball and still an amateur in Football.

Exactly. This instance happened at Memphis twice, I believe.

1.) C.J. Henry went to play baseball for the Yankees after he graduated from high school. When Xavier committed to Memphis, C.J. was able to leave the Yankees and come back to school, as long as the sport he was playing was NOT the sport he was paid to play

2.) Will Hudgens was drafted in baseball after his junior or senior year (who could actually tell what year of eligibility Will was in at a certain moment). Will was able to play rookie or single-A ball with the Cubs, I believe. He was also able to leave the baseball team early, in order to come suit up collegiately for football.

the ncaa had to make this move. If they didn't, there'd be a massive double standard between what american and european standards of amateurism are. You can't change your definition based on what continent somebody is from

Wolken made a good point on Kentucky saying it was only $33,000 in funds so he should be eligible. He said, "Thats only a few thousand short of the average NBDL salary, maybe the NCAA should start recruiting from there?"

My favorite quote was from a coach that said "if Kanter is elgible then I'm going to sign Ricky Rubio". 03-lmfao

I like DeCourcey.

But he is mentally blocked on this one.

If anything- the fact the kid took 100K for three years instead of, as DeCourcey posits- millions of dollars- then he is stupid.

He is spinning this as though the poor kid who received 33K a year was doing everything possible to remain an amateur- yet play with pros. In what universe did they have to take any extra money? Let alone, by DeCourcey's own story- 20K for high school educational expenses? And 13K more?

He was paid- a lot more than just travel reimbursements. If one of our kids was paid similarly they cannot play.

Where all this DeC whining coming from I have no idea.

Bloom would have been unable to ski for the University of Colorado.

Kanter cannot play basketball for a university.

DeCoursey has trouble separating himself from Cal's testicles.

RE: UK's Kanter ruled INELIGIBLE
I just didn't know that the NCAA actually had written bylaws that differed someone being a professional in one sport (usually baseball, but threw the skiing w/ Jeremy Bloom) and an amateur in another (usually football) from someone attempting to be an amateur in one sport after being a professional. I guess we just never thought anyone would ever try it. It's not like LeBron James is, all of a sudden, going to play small forward for Ohio State.

I missed it if this had been pointed out, sorry if it was - but there have been numerous players (even the "almost" Tiger CJ Henry) that have played concurrently professionally in one sport and as a college amateur in another. The difference with Bloom was that he had endorsements. The NCAA will allow you to work professionally in a sport other than your own, as long as you don't take endorsement dollars, and retain your college eligibility. Bloom had deals with gear companies so it was a no go.
