ETSU can learn from this guy...

DiPietro said he needs more time to evaluate the UT system's athletics, although he said athletics play an important role in the overall health of the system.

"[Athletics] are the front door on the university," he said. "It is an opportunity to help us engage with people. Athletics adds a robustness."

He said he still is learning "the moving parts of the place" but has confidence in UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek and UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton, who now reports directly to Cheek.

We need someone just like that at ETSU.

A very politically correct answer, but keep in mind he's over all UT campuses. That includes Martin and Chattanooga. Having seen UT-Martin's facilities (or lack thereof) and general lack of support for anything they have a statement like that might shoot up a red flag, but we'll see.
He could just be eluding to Mike Hamilton being on the chopping block.

The fact that they finally have the AD reporting to the UT campus Prez is huge. Very hot topic for many years.

I actually tend to think this might help infuse the other UT campuses in terms of the "front porch" with facility issues and funding struggles. This guy is an Ag campus guy, Ag guys tend to like the normal things in life like football and basketball. Surgeons just want to cut.

Only when required by SACS did UT make the reporting change for athletics. I believe this change in SACS standard came after the Knight Commission report.

There was a fairly recent letter to the editor in the Knoxvegas paper from an influential donor detailing why UT should ignore SACS. I guess athletics above accreditation. Just continues to reinforce that ut is a collection of athletic programs masquerading as a university. Sad.

SACS Standard:

3.2.11 The institution’s chief executive officer has ultimate responsibility
for, and exercises appropriate administrative and fiscal control
over, the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program. (Control
of intercollegiate athletics)
