Soros Gives $1 Million to Back California Marijuana Legalization
Soros Gives $1 Million to Back California Marijuana Legalization

By Alison Vekshin - Oct 26, 2010 1:45 PM CT

illionaire investor George Soros gave $1 million to support passage of marijuana legalization in California a week before the election, after polls showed the proposal losing steam with likely voters.

“Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, while providing many billions of dollars in revenue annually,” Soros, chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC, wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed article today.

Soros donated $1 million to the “Drug Policy Action Committee to Tax and Regulate Marijuana - Yes on Prop. 19,” according to a filing posted on the California Secretary of State’s website. Soros’s spokesman, Michael Vachon, confirmed the contribution.

Proposition 19, a referendum on the Nov. 2 ballot, would make it legal for Californians over 21 to possess and grow pot for personal use. The measure has lost ground, with 51 percent of likely voters opposed, to 39 percent in support, according to a University of Southern California/Los Angeles Times poll Oct. 22. A May survey showed backers leading, 49 percent to 41 percent.

It's too late to change my mind, I already voted against it.

I'm impressed you're so gung-ho to spend your tax dollars on a cause that helps no one. Nice to see that liberal side of you.

Thankfully if this fails, it means when your kids walk down the street to buy the still easily available weed that was there when you grew up, they can still get lucky and have it laced with something else and experience a new high. Or if they're luckier yet, perhaps they try to buy it from the wrong guy and get to enjoy the rush of a near-death experience when they're robbed. Wouldn't want to keep those growing experiences from them, builds character.

tax dollars? As for the rest.... are you speaking from experience or are you letting your imagination run wild? Now, put down the doobie and step away from the keyboard.

Kids shouldn't smoke pot legally or illegally. Legalizing it gives them two choices instead of one. Brilliant.

Just like "Anti-Gay Marriage" Issues got the Religious Right out to vote Republican in past elections, the Marijuana Ballot Issue Helps get the Hippies and Leftists to the Polls to pull a straight Democrat Ticket, and while there, vote to legalize weed.

Might as well legalize it, and use those resources to stamp out the hard ****. I don't care what anyone says, weed is not near as bad as alcohol, and I'd rather be a toker thank a drunk anyday.

Ha.. not at all Sum. Did it a few time years ago in high school, just wasn't my thing (I have asthma so that probably had something to do with it). Doesn't mean I don't know that any kid in America can just as easily get weed as they can alcohol right now. Legalizing it wouldn't change that. It'd just make it safer, and we'd stop wasting my tax money on a war we can't win.
