Matt Ball Jr. carded a final-round 72 and tied for seventh (-1) at the Tarheel Intercollegiate. Behind their senior, the Rams finished fifth among a competitive field that included Georgia Tech, N.C. State, North Carolina and Duke.
VCU finished 17 over (292-297-292=881) for the 54-hole tournament, which kicked off the Rams' fall season. The Black and Gold were four strokes off the pace of N.C. State and eight behind UNC Greensboro. Georgia Tech, ranked eighth nationally by Golfweek, won going away at 22-under. N.C. State (-2) earned runner-up honors.
With their effort, the Rams topped top-100 schools Duke (13), East Tennessee State (73), Davidson (87), UNC Wilmington (90), East Carolina (96).
Ball Jr. proved incredibly consistent throughout the weekend, shooting 72-71-72. He was also the second best player in the field in par 4 scoring at 3-under and recorded 37 pars.
The Rams also received a breakout performance from junior Gino Vandenberg, who tied for 28th at 5-over. Vandenberg, making his third start as a Ram after a solid week of qualifying, shot a career-best 72 in the opening round and carded 75 and 74 in the second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Adam Ball recovered from a tough first round to place 45th. He was 2-under during Sunday's final round and was fifth in the field with 12 birdies over the weekend.
Freshman Hanish Nagrani and senior Rocky Khara placed 59th and 68th, respectively, to round out VCU's top five.
