MATT BALL JR. NAMED TO A-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
[Image: balljr-academic-0513.jpg?max_width=800&a...height=450]

RICHMOND, Va. – VCU rising senior Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) has been named to the Atlantic 10 Conference's Men's Golf All-Academic Team, the league announced Monday. The team was selected by a vote of the league's golf media relations directors.

Ball Jr., who is majoring in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, has been named to the Dean's List twice during his VCU career, as well as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in five consecutive semesters.

This season on the course, the 2011 First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection posted a 74.88 stroke average in 11 tournaments. In three of his starts, he recorded a top 10 finish.

Ball Jr. saved one of his best performances for crunch time. The Richmond native tied for seventh at the A-10 Championship April 26-28 at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. Ball Jr. fired a season-best 3-under 69 on the final day to spark the Rams, who finished second and turned in their best effort of the season.

All five of VCU's top five golfers are expected to return in 2013-14.

ADAM BALL’S RUN AT U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP ENDS
[Image: ball-endofroad-0817.jpg?max_width=800&am...height=450]

BROOKLINE, Mass. – VCU rising sophomore Adam Ball saw his exciting run at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship come to a close Friday when he was defeated in quarterfinal match play by Matt Fitzpatrick 4 and 3.

After nearly a week of some the best golf of Ball's career, Fitzpatrick proved to be too much. The highest placing amateur at the British Open last month, Fitzpatrick won the first three holes after the turn to surge to a 4-up lead and effectively clinch the match.

VCU’S FINAL ROUND FLOURISH CAPTURES ODU/OBX CROWN
[Image: odu-obx-team-1022.jpg?max_width=800&...height=450]

ODU/Outer Banks Collegiate
(Kilmarlich G.G. - Powells Point, N.C.)
Course Info: 6,550 yards, par 71
Finish: 1st of 18 (Khara 2nd overall)

TALKING POINTS
Three Rams shot sub-70, and VCU blistered the field in Tuesday's final round on the way to a team championship at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Collegiate.

The Rams shot 271 Tuesday, the best round by any team in the tournament, to catapult from fourth place and pull away for a nine-stroke victory over runner-up Maryland. VCU finished 9-under for the 54-hole tournament.

Senior Rocky Khara (-6) tied for second after Marshall's Logan Lagodich won a one-hole playoff that also included Jamison Randall of Old Dominion. Khara (70-68-69=207) fired a final-round 68 Tuesday to force his way into the playoff.

Khara's total score of 207 is the lowest by a Ram in a 54-hole tournament since Marc Dobias shot 206 at the Marshall Invitational Sept. 12-13, 2011.

Sophomore Steffen Harm and freshman Hanish Nagrani both shot 5-under 66 for VCU on Tuesday to spearhead the Rams' final push. The scores are the lowest round by either player in a VCU uniform and are the lowest rounds by a Ram since 2011.

Harm (75-69-66=210) tied for sixth overall, while Nagrani (75-74-66=215) tied for 19th. Meanwhile, sophomore Adam Ball shot a 1-under 70 Tuesday and placed 14th (74-70-70=214) for VCU.
Harm led the field in par 4 scoring (3.78), while Khara recorded 38 pars in 54 holes.
