RE: News
Looks like a pretty good list David, but replace Idaho State with Lamar. Lamar has been suggested by a handful of sources as being one of the schools that presented.

No, I'd like to see them go 9/12 by adding Montana, UTSA, and Texas State plus Seattle, Denver, and Utah Valley.

RE: News
If the WAC can find at 2-3 Big Sky schools willing to move to FBS, they won't need to mess with taking Denver, Seattle, or Utah Valley-the Big Sky can use them to offset the football-only memberships of Cal-Davis, Cal Poly-SLO, and possibly North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Southland will probably emerge from this with less than 12 teams, unless if some Division II schools in their footprint are willing to move to Division I.

Anyone know when an expansion decision will be made?

Just a reminder, UTSA is currently not a football playing school
They will start next year playing a schedule that includes
some FCS , D2, and NAIA opponents .
Lamar is in their first season playing football again after 10+ years.
They already knocked off SELA and gave McNeese St more than they can handle. Their initial schedule is very similar to a normal FCS schedule.

As far as the Southland Conference goes, many of the nationally rank D2 football schools are from the LoneStar Conference. Abliene Christian, Tarlton St,A&M Kingsville, or West Texas A&M could jump into the Southland if TxState was invited to the WAC.

I read something not too long ago that West Texas A&M actually wanted to return to FBS, but I discounted it since I can't see a school moving straight from D-2 to FBS. They've also got less than 8000 students, so it's just hard to see them funding an FBS program especially in a conference with travel costs like the new WAC will have.

I guess we will find who the WAC will had to the their roster. I just hope Texas-San Antonio and Texas State aren't in. I would like to see it this way: Hawaii, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, New Mexico State, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, and Utah State.

RE: News
While that may be more geographically compact, Idaho State is not going to be one of the teams. And Sacramento State probably doesn't have the money to move up because of all of California's budget issues. When a university is slashing professors and jacking up tuition at the same time, they can't justify moving up in football...especially when it's not like the WAC is going to fill up. If California's situation improves, then Sac State will have the option to move up in several years.

The only reason I talked about Sacramento State was they are already in the conference for baseball and gymnastics.

WTAMU just spent over $20 million dollars in universal facilities upgrades. While I haven't heard anything about their interest in upgrading one way or another, that move seems to indicate they are willing to spend money.

So the WAC will have a combination of FCS and FBS schools? Are they that desperate?

Depending on the fallout of the Fresno State/Nevada situation, it is possible that UTSA and Texas State will count as FBS schools in 2012, which would be their first season in the league.

RE: News
My understanding is that the the proposal to waive the 6/5 rule with respect to automatic bid status for basketball has been enacted, so if Louisiana Tech leaves it really doesn't have much effect besides opening up another slot for an FCS upgrade to join the WAC-5. I'd imagine Montana (and possibly Montana State), Sacramento State, and Portland State would be higher priorities for the WAC since Texas would be the eastern edge of the conference. The only catch would be trying to find another school close to New Mexico State to serve as their travel partner (Utah State is closer to Idaho than New Mexico State), which points to another Texas school.
