RE: Updated 10/7/08--BlazerTalk.com Guide to B'ham
Bogue's is still open on Clairmont and has a new location at the old Florida Grill in Homewood.
I have heard nothing but good things about Chris Z's, but have never eaten there.
The best breakfast for your money downtown is Courtney's.

Let's add the new Rogue Tavern to the suggested sites! Check them out at http://www.roguetavern.com!

Probably could use something about our Good People brewing company so folks can give our local brew a try. A lot of places are serving it now, I think J. Clyde might be the only place I've seen that has every one.

When I went by Twist and Shout the other day it looked like they were closed for good. Don't know why cause it was always jumping. There was a for lease sign in the window.

I think most oldtimers in the 'ham think of Bogues more for breakfast. Good old fashioned southern fare.
I'd also submit that the brunch at Silvertron is very very good and not overly expensive.

Something to add to the attractions:
A nice little hidden gem in East Lake, the Southern Museum of Flight, including a history of aviation in Birmingham and Alabama, and the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame (yes, there is such a thing).
Admission $5 for adults, $4 for kids 6 to 17, and younger than that, free.
If you're heading NE on 1st Avenue (toward Trussville), take a left onto 75th Street N and follow the signs.

There are about to be a bunch of new hotels opening on highway 150 in Hoover a various points this year. I know the new Embassy Suites opens April 1st. There's also gonna be a Renaissance Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and a couple others.

There are a LOT of hotels in Hoover (150) and on 280, but it's overkill to list them all... I'm thinking about doing away with the Lakeshore list just to encourage folks to stay closer to campus at the nice, new hotels that are banking on UAB for bookings.

I still don't see Newk's on the list. I have two friends that came to UAB last year, one from UCONN, the other from LSU. Both of them LOVED Newk's. My friend from UCONN is a sports writer in CT, born a New Yorker, and said that the best restaurant on his entire week long visit, was Dreamland (he's a Yankee, he is deprived of BBQ). His close 2nd, was Newk's. This includes many places I took him to in downtown, down 280 corridor, and in Tuscaloosa (he wanted to visit Bear Bryant Museum).
Newk's - Thumbs up from 2 visitors from cities known for good food (New York & New Orleans).

Update: The Costas BBQ in TrussVegas is closed, and the old one on Roebuck Parkway has been renovated and re-opened.

Also, there's a new place in the old Burly Earl's front, but I haven't eaten there, and I can't remember the name. Blue River Grill, or something fresh-watery sounding like that.

Eh... If you're going to stay downtown, I just like to encourage visitors to stay closer to UAB and within walking distance of places to eat. I'll add the Sheraton & new Westin when the entertainment district finally opens.

I didn't see this in here, but I just scanned the page so I may have missed it. But The Original Pancake House in Five Points is awesome. Great food, and pretty cheap.
