OT: "War Eagle" and the Elephant?
As I was watching part of the Auburn game they showed an eagle on the field and I told my wife that one of the chants for Auburn is called "War Eagle'

She then asked me why they yell that if thier mascot is the tigers?

Sadly I had no answer and then she also brought up the "elephant" logo for Alabama.

To which I ALSO had no answer.

I now we have lots of Alabama folks around here, so I thought I would ask them what the deal is?

"War Eagle" is the battle cry of Auburn. It is also used in passing when two Auburn fans acknowledge each other no matter the local.
Not sure why they us an eagle, though. I guess it's easier to care for an eagle compared to a tiger?

Maybe an Auburn or Alabama board could better answer those questions? I have no idea...

I actually know this.

The War Eagle story goes: A war veteran brought home an eagle he found on the battlefield. he nursed it to health and actually brought the thing to an Auburn game. I know right? Anwyays, the thing took off and flew overhead and Auburn led a big comeback. Everyone chanted "War Eagle."

The Tide story is much more simple. It was some sort of media that coined the term. Said they rolled over the opposition like a "crimson tide." it stuck.

Right. And depending on what version you hear, the eagle took to flight, the crowd cheered War Eagle, and the eagle landed and died.

Pre game at Auburn always has the eagle released from the upper deck, flight around the stadium is led by a long "Waaaaaaarrrrrr" from the crowd, then "Eagle, Hey!" as the eagle lands on the field. Longer flights get the crowd really pumped. Pretty cool tradition.

RE: OT: "War Eagle" and the Elephant?
Reason the mascot is an elephant:
In the 1930 Alabama-Ole Miss game, Coach Wallace Wade started his second string in the first quarter. They were still bigger than the Mississippi first string but Ole Miss was hanging tough. Sports writer Everett Strupper, of the Atlanta Journal, wrote "At the end of the (first) quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity." Several other writers referred to the Alabama linemen Red Elephants and the name stuck. That is how Alabama came to be associated with elephants. Now, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant fittingly named Big Al.

Reason they are called The Crimson Tide:
Early football teams were simply know as the Varsity or the Crimson White after the school colors. The nickname Thin Red Line was used by sports writers until 1906. The nickname Crimson Tide was penned by Hugh Roberts, of the Birmingham Age-Herald, after the 1907 Alabama-Auburn game. In a game that was played in a sea of red mud, Alabama played heavily favored Auburn to a 6-6 tie. After the game, Roberts dubbed Alabama the Crimson Tide. Zipp Newman, of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than anyone else.

Then you have our own North Texas as the Mean Green and also known as the Eagles. I think there are a few other schools who have the dual identities, too.

RE: OT: "War Eagle" and the Elephant?
It is very simple. "Crimson Tide" and "Mean Green" are team nicknames. "Elephants" and "Eagles" are mascots.

In the case of North Texas, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of "Eagles," so once the "Mean Green" name was coined it stuck to be distinctive.

There is SOME talk on the FAU boards of people wanting the name of FAU changed to "The Blue Wave" since were going so beach heavy themed with the stadium.

I personally wouldnt mind seeing some sort of combination for FAU like is expalined above, but Id rather see the Fan base become known as "The Blue Wave"

Good thing you aren't located in the Gulf, or else I think Blue Wave might be out of the question.

Yeah we brought that up.

But "The Blule Wave" does have history at FAU. For MANY years the Baseball team was known as the The Blue Wave, and then with the rebranding effort about a decade ago they were forced to go to Owls.

When the rebranding took place Owls beat out "The Blue Wave" in a universeity vote between the students/alumini/administration.

Owls logo's are now engrained all over the University so there is no way we are "Officially" changing it. But I would like "the Blue Wave" to be incorporated into the new staidum.
