Football is useless???

Tell that to all of those Marshall alums that were there at the time of the crash. There was a communal reason that it was important for football to continue on.

Football is woven into the fabric of our culture. To say its useless would be like saying art is useless.

I think he meant that when you lose a family member, it changes your perspective and may make you value your time with you family more than you value it with football. Just sayin'

I'd like to think Marshall would have rallied in the same way if it was the basketball or baseball teams.

But then again, I wouldn't have flippantly thrown that tragedy into discussion for no good reason.

It wasn't flippant. I was just saying that Bower would have more than likely felt a bigger sense of duty (in the wake of that tragedy) to his players, since he is a paternal figure in many of their lives.

It's much bigger than a supposed "game." It's about living. Football is a celebration of life. 04-bow

If so I can well understand just not giving a damn about something as useless as football.

Actually this is one of the reasons I have somuch respect for Bower, he lost his daughter at the beginning of the 97 season. He went on to go 9-3, win C-USA, demolish Pitt in the Liberty Bowl, and finished #16 in the country. His coaching that season was nothing short of spectacular and dont let anyone tell you differently.

I am of the opinion that our dipsh*t AD did not like Bower and didn't give him many resources that would have been helpful.

USM went 9-5 under Bower in 06, the most sucessfull year we had experienced since the championship season in 03. The next year, all 3 QBs (J and M Young, and Reaves) experience serious injuries. With the two Youngs unable to play, Reaves was forced into action despite a torn muscle in his side. And people actually wonder why we struggled that season. Then at the end of the season, we gave Cincinatti one hell of a fight and that Cincy team was a HELL of a lot better than that USC team we played last night.

Simple fact of the matter is a large majority of USM fans are under the impression that we possess the same lure as Ole Miss or any of those schools when the simple fact of the matter is we dont. Our success has come from getting what we can and then working miracles with it. The Brett Favres, Lee Roberts, Damion Fletchers and Patrick Surtains that we have picked up are the reason for our success.

I dont give a flying crap in Deandre Brown has offers from everybody, if he is going to sulk and half-ass it like he did last night, I dont want him anywhere near USM. He will NEVER be in the same league as Sherrod Gideon and Todd Pinkston IMO, I dont care how much "potential" he has.

Plain and simple, we had it coming.

We were down to 62 scholarship players when Fedora took the job. Bower ran off a TON of players, and slacked on recruiting the last 3 seasons immensely. Anyone that says otherwise really has no proof to refute it.

This USC team will win more than 8 games this season, I'll put money on it. That Cinci team was pretty good, but we were very average, especially on defense. 03 was our last good defensive season, and the drop off in talent is undeniable.

*Sidenote, Surtain was borderline illiterate coming out of high school...Part of the reason he was at USM.*

You're claiming DeAndre half-assed last night? Wasn't he the ONLY OFFENSIVE PLAYER running down the linebacker on the fumble recovery?

Wasn't Brown on the field in the fourth quarter when USM was down 41-6 with a hurt rib still catching balls, and a TD? I believe so.

Saying he half-assed is asinine. The defense half-assed, as did the kickoff return team and Austin Davis.

to be fair, DB did look like he was dogging some routes last night while he was on the field... which is frustrating, considering the chemistry he and AD had their first year on the field together prior to the injury

Sure he ran the guy down.....after getting chewed out on the sideline the series before. USC bottled him up and he got frustrated. Fedora seems like a great X and O guy, obviously a great recruiter, but his teams don't instill the fear that Bower's did. My $.02

So there was a decade more or less between the loss and the coaching collapse?

My brother did not come home from Vietnam. This many years later, the real pain comes from remembering what it did to my father. So if Jeff Bower had said "to hell with football" (which was my impression) it made perfect sense. No parent should have to bury a child. Thanks for the clarification.

Bower won CUSA in 2003 and won 9 games in 2007 while winning the East. That is far from a coaching collapse over the last decade you stupid idiot. Last night on national television was a complete coaching collapse. Maybe you have your nose stuck to far up Fedora's azz to know that. Fedora is a bunch of hot air and nothing else. He can't compete against the SEC or the Sun Belt. ##@$ Larry Fedora.

Dude, all I know about Larry Fedora is he actually lost a game to a team coached by Neil Callaway, which tells me all I need or care to know. I was curious why Jeff Bower lost his fire and his job, and a USM fan with the twin powers of reading comprehension and courtesy explained. I'm sorry you've lost whatever mind you might have had just because South Carolina spanked your team, and hope you recover someday.

I thought it was standard practice at USM for all coaches to win at least 4 before ECU got one on them.

Sir, you have my apology. I read your post in a hurry and took it as being from a USM fan criticizing Coach Bower yet again. I based my response on that assumption. Once again, you have my apology.

As for Coach Bower, yes the loss of his daughter Kristen had an impact on hiim. How could it not. I will say though, that the Fall he lost Kristen, he managed to keep his team together and won CUSA and the Liberty Bowl that year. In the face of all the heartache and pain, he still managed to stay focused on his team. I have forever had the utmost respect for Coach Bower. He is as real a person as you could hope to meet. Unlike the pretty boy wannabe head coach we have now.

If we're on this board long enough all of us at times make mistakes in reading posts and respond in inappropriate ways....all of us. The true character of a poster is shown in how you respond when you recognize you've made a mistake.

I don't know which is funnier, usmbacker on fedora (who also called for Corkys head during the same season he led us to our only CWS appearance) or Memphis fans weighing in on coaching hires.

For the record, Bower was 11-12 at the same point where Fedora is 14-13. In Bowers third season we lost to UGa 54-24 and was blanked 40-0 by Bama.

For all of the people praising Bower, he won 3 games in his 3rd season at USM. I guarantee you that Fedora will win more than 3 games this year. I see Houston as the only real challenge the rest of this season, and we get them at home. We should win the East by default, as there isn't anyone else that will be competitive. Memphis and UAB are jokes. ECU is at home, and they are breaking in a new coach and system. UCF didn't break 40 on an FCS team.

Well everybody, look who is here. This is our old buddy Eagle N' Yune. Of course he has been banned on this site under so many names, who can keep count. Mods if you want to check his ISP, he lives in Colorado now.

Well Yune, I realize you have a major man crush on Larry boy. So he could never lose enough to end your true love for him. After all your posts on the South Carolina board proclaiming how great USM was, you have once again come off as the biggest tool in the shed.

So everyone, give Yunie boy a big welcome back.

I'm not here to stay with you bunch of lunatics. You gotta hate USM to stay on this board. Just wanted to point out how foolish you and the other Bower jock-sniffers are. Bower won 3 games in year 3. Get back with me if Fedora can't beat that. I noticed that you had no rebuttal for that fact. Just personal attacks, as usual for you. Enjoy...
