Kilgore named starting QB for MT
Kilgore named MTSU starter at QB
August 30, 2010

MTSU sophomore Logan Kilgore's first snap as a Division I quarterback will come against a Big Ten Conference team on national TV.

After practice Sunday night, MTSU coach Rick Stockstill announced Kilgore would be the starter in Thursday's opener against Minnesota. The game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Floyd Stadium and air nationally on ESPNU.

That comes after senior starter Dwight Dasher was suspended indefinitely for accepting a loan against NCAA rules. Kilgore was selected over fellow junior college transfer Jeff Murphy, the only other full-time quarterback on the roster.

Kilgore, rated a three-star prospect by multiple recruiting services, arrived at MTSU in January as a mid-term signee. The 6-foot-3, 178-pounder played only one season at Bakersfield (Calif.) College, posting a 10-2 record and passing for 2,512 yards and 22 touchdowns as a freshman. Kilgore was named National Northern Conference offensive MVP for his lone season in the junior college ranks.

Kilgore, a native of Rocklin, Calif., is a capable passer with above-average mobility. He went 21-of-34 passing for 322 yards and two touchdowns in MTSU's Blue-White spring game.

Dasher, the Sun Belt Conference preseason offensive player of the year, was a dynamic weapon last season. He became only the fourth player in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 2,500 yards in the same season in 2009.

Stockstill said there will be tweaks to MTSU's offense with the dual-threat Dasher out of the lineup.

"What we do will obviously change a little bit, but not a whole bunch," Stockstill said. " ... We will still run the quarterback, but the running game load will have to go a little bit more to (running backs Phillip Tanner and Ben Cunningham), which is good because I have great confidence in those guys. But nothing in the passing game will change."

MTSU running back Phillip Tanner said MTSU's starting quarterback will not ultimately decide the outcome of Thursday's game.

"I don't think (quarterback change) affects anything that much," Tanner said. "We still have to go out there and do what we need to do to win this game. Whatever quarterback is out there, we are behind them 100 percent."

I just don't see us doing well. It's too easy to miss a snap, make a bad hand off, throw into coverage, and the list goes on. He does have JUCO experience though, so maybe my fears are not warranted.

So is there any final word on Dasher yet?

Dasher is out for at least 4 games. Kilgore is thin, but muscular. He'll be fine if he can keep the mistakes down.

That's not a "final word" (unless something official came out earlier today). It is what the evidence and rules point to.

Looks like they're putting McLovin in a football uniform.

True, but it's probably going to happen.
