I've been getting pretty tired of him, but as bad as he's been throwing, he's considerably better than Kawakami.

The bad news is, Kawakami is under contract through next season and Lowe is under contract for two more years and he's being paid way too much for us to move him.

The good news is, next year he's going to be at best our #4 and that's if Mike Minor can't pass him. In 2012(his final year under contract) Medlen should be back and Lowe could have to earn his spot. Looking down the road a few years, if we can keep it all intact Jurjens, Hanson, Minor, Medlen, Teheran, Vizcaino... I'm not sure which five will be our starters, but if we can keep the best five out of of those seven, we could be looking best rotation in the bigs and one that could give some of those braves rotations from the nineties a run for their money.

And with his contract, he's pretty much untrade-able.

What happened to his sinker? You'd think with mashers like the Marlins, they'd be pounding them into the ground left and right.

No big deal when you have McCann walking off ball games.

RE: OT: Derek Lowe...
Lowe's going to be the #5 next year with Medlen likely to miss the season. Actually, I'm hoping the Braves and Kawakami can reach an agreement on a buyout so he can go back to Japan. I'm sure he'd prefer that to pitching in the pen all next year. That said, I'd almost prefer Kawakami to be in the rotation and Lowe moved to the pen. Kawakami pitched better than his record indicated and Lowe would be very effective from the bullpen for an inning I think just with his slider (or curveball as he calls it). So you can have a mediocre starter and a mediocre reliever with Lowe and Kawakami respectively, or I think you can have a mediocre starter and a good reliever the other way around.

At this point I would rather pay him not to play at all, than pay him to lose ball games.

3 words: New York Yankees. The end of their rotation is crap, Vasquez can whiff 'em but not much else that's positive (I smile about that deal every day). He's a big market vet who has handled the AL East. Ask them for a PTBN from the depth's of the NY-P League and give them some cash for his salary (Yankees always want that feeling like they fleeced a team, give them some sweetness on top so they believe they owned us for grabbing him).

Everyone's happy except maybe Lowe who gets all ticked every time we talk of dumping him...which basically began the minute the ink dried on his deal.

KK is tougher since his numbers at Gwinnett mirror his Braves output. I'd be open for him in the pen, though not over guys with futures like Dunn and Marek.

Lowe is being paid WAAAAAAAAAY too much to be coming out of the bullpen. If we were going to move him to the bullpen, I'd much rather just do whatever it takes to get rid of him, including picking up a large portion of his salary and trading him.

Well, since we couldn't trade him except by paying most of his salary, I'd rather keep the difference and have an effective late innings guy with Kawakami as the #5.

It would come down to how much we'd have to take on of Lowe's salary and you must also keep in mind that we have Lowe on the hook for two more seasons.

I'm not 100% sure on these numbers, but I think their numbers look like this:

2011: Lowe $16 million, Kawakami $7 million
2012: Lowe $16 million

I can't imagine we could get anyone to take Lowe on for more than $10 million and even that is probably way too optimistic. We may be able to entice someone into taking him if we pick up half, but even at that, we'd still be paying him $8 million for each of the next two seasons. Kawakami we may be able to buy out of next season, hold on to Lowe for 2011 and then in 2012 when Medlen will be back and Minor will be starting his second full season as a big leaguer, then we could talk about trying to dump Lowe while picking up a large portion of his salary.

RE: OT: Derek Lowe...
Lowe is $15 M each for 2011 and 2012. (60 M over 09-12)

Kawakami is $7.333 M through 2011. (23 M over 09-11)

They are the 1st and 4th highest paid players on the Braves' roster.

A few of these guys have options for another year at the end of their contracts.
1. Lowe (4 yr/60M)
2. Chipper (3/42)
3. Hudson (3/28)
4. KK (3/23)
5. Wagner (1/7)
6. McCann (6/26.8)
7. McLouth (3/15.75)
8. Saito (1/3.2)
9. Cabrera (1/3.1)
10. Diaz (1/2.55)

Prado, Hanson, Heyward etc. are making at or close to the league min. on a 1 yr. contract and will get some $$ next year through arbitration etc.. We'll shed Wagner and possibly Chipper and Glaus' $1.75 M, which will help.

Heard today that in 2011 Kawakami and Lowe will account for somewhere just north of 25% of our total payroll next season...03-banghead

And don't forget Nate McLouth taking up $5 million a season...that's a pretty solid closer for that kind of money.

How much is Soriano making with the Rays?

I miss that guy though Wagner has made it a little easier to not miss him as much.

Derek Lowe ESPN Article

RHP Derek Lowe given cortisone shot

I just watched McClouth get nailed in the armpit. Damn.

Hey, he is on base. It's progress.

I'd also like to say that Heyward has been on fire. He just hit McClouth and Infante in to go 3-2 up on the Mets.

I hate the ******* Mets.

Haha! David Ross just hit a Grand Slam.

It's now 8-2 Braves. **** you Mets!

Tom Glavine regularly got these. This is Lowe's 1st. I don't think it's a big deal. Neither did Mazzone on the radio today.

And, thanks for the 5th inning live-blog. . . I guess. . .

Well, Lowe won't make his next start because of the "right posterior elbow soreness". KK will in his stead.
