RANKINGS
1) Donald Buckram, UTEP: It’s hard to argue with a guy who racked up nearly 1,600 yards as a junior.
2) Lance Dunbar, North Texas: As a sophomore, led Sun Belt in rushing as sophomore with almost 1,400 yards.
3) Charles Sims, Houston: The reigning C-USA Offensive Freshman of the Year is a versatile weapon for the Cougars. He and Bryce Beall comprise a solid backfield tandem for UH.
4) Christine Michael, Texas A&M: Michael is the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Along with junior Cyrus Gray, they give the Ags a potent one-two punch.
5) Tre’ Newton, Texas: Southlake product could thrive if Longhorns run ball more as Garrett Gilbert gets acclimated under center.
6) Baron Batch, Texas Tech: Fifth-year senior should finish career in positive fashion. Batch is a solid contributor as both runner and receiver.
7) Ed Wesley, TCU: Along with fellow sophomore Matthew Tucker, Wesley gives TCU a pairing to replace the departed Joseph Turner.
8) Jay Finley, Baylor: Three-year starter returns for senior season healthy after missing time with injured ankle in 2009.
9) Tyler Smith, Rice: Finished sophomore season with back-to-back 100-yard games for Owls. Michigan transfer Sam McGuffie could also get his share of carries.
10) Zach Line, SMU: Could lead SMU’s backfield by committee; is a solid blocker and short-yardage back. Freshmen Darryl Fields and Kevin Pope are two upstarts to keep an eye on.
Lance Dunbar, North Texas
Probably one of the better kept secrets in Texas is Dunbar, who comes off a sophomore campaign where he ran for nearly 1,400 yards for the Mean Green. A 2009 First Team All-Sun Belt Conference performer, the Haltom product rushed for 1,378 yards with 17 touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The top rusher in the Sun Belt last fall, Dunbar also finished 15th in the nation in rushing. He started the last eight games for UNT in 2009 and looks ready to pick up where he left off in 2010.
