I hope you don't mind me using this thread for my first post, but the thread is on a subject dear to my heart, and I thought it would be a good place to start. I've been reading the board for a few months and thinking about posting, but it was so crazy around here for a while, I thought it best to wait until things had settled a bit. So, here I am...whatever that means. It is good to find so many people dedicated to helping animals. I've worked in animal rescue for several years, now. The baby in my av is a New Orleans rescue, and my angel pups (whom I just lost 2 months ago) was also a rescue.
skyview - You said one of your pups had some pittie in her. It looks to me like they both do. The dog I just lost was full pit, and the sweetest, most amazing lil girl I have ever known (and I have been blessed to know some great dogs). A pure clown. You are in for some great fun.

Welcome Stella Blue ! I believe this is a wonderful thread for a first post for us "pup-people". I truly admire and appreciate you as a rescuer ! I am very sorry for the loss of your babygirl and I understand "the clown" (wiggle-butt) of those sweet pitties already. I find your observation of my lil' Border mix dude very interesting because I kinda thought maybe...but thought it was just me looking for the breed that I love so much in him.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcome, except for Bandwagon Jumper, you may feel free to go jump on another bandwagon. Appropriately insulting? If not, though tanyaskees beat me to the neutering line, it could also, possibly, be applied to you? Tanya, I just noticed my location didn't come out. I am out west. That is probably best, because I am sure if I saw a picture of a pit puppy, I'd be doomed. Skyview, thank you for the condolences. My heart is still just crushed. Wiggle-butt was, in fact, one of my many nick-names for her. I always described her as 65 pounds of love and muscle. I saw the picture before I read your post and just figured I was looking at a picture of two pittie/pit mixes. I hope you have some Kongs. Those jaws are truly epic. The Kong was the only thing, no matter how "indestructable" it was supposed to be, which she did not decimate in a matter of minutes.

Stella- We have two dogs, one of whom won't be around much longer, she has cancer, and have already lost one this year. But the third one is a certified therapy dog and her nickname is also wiggle-butt. When you say that to her she wags her tail even harder and looks like a snake crawling. Losing such a friend is very hard.

I lost my girl to cancer, and I am so sorry you are going through that. It must be all the more difficult having already lost one this year. I am sure your wiggle-butt has been, and will continue to be, of source of great consolation.
That last sentence could sound very wrong.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a pet forum ? pics, advice, questions, shared experiences, adoption pics ?

Bad news. We had to find her another home because one of our boys is allergic. They adored her, but finding her another home was our only option. I hope my son eventually grows out of his allergy because we all wanted to keep her

There are 87 posts in this pet thread, and if I were to count, just as many pet threads about pets already in this forum. Isn't that what this forum was created for? To talk about whatever whenever without reproach?

As for me, I cannot believe that our Black Lab Shadow is already 5 yrs old....to go with our 16 yr old kitty, Sneezy. Sneezy is in his twilight and is light as a feather but he still rules the roost. Shadow is healthy as a horse, although we don't get him enough exercise.

GT, I would go with the electric fence. I know more than a few people that have them and swear by them. One of them has a dog trail across the back of his backyard where the grass has been worn down right on the fenceline, and it sits right on a tee box for a local country club. Golfers there all day long and he just runs up and down the fenceline barking his head off. The shock only has to get em' a few times before they learn the boundaries....I guarantee you, this dog would never have to wear his collar again inside or out.

Real, or fake? Never mind the busty woman walking her dog in the park - it may just be her pooch who's sporting implants.

Some pet owners who neuter their male dogs are opting for a surgical procedure meant to make Fido feel like he's back in the good ol' days B.C. - Before Castration.

Neuticles - testicular implants for dogs that look and feel like the real thing - are said to boost a pet's self-esteem by replacing what was lost. It's a procedure that's becoming increasingly popular in New York.

"We did it so Truman could still walk proudly down the street," says Penny Glazier, a Manhattan restaurateur, of her 8-year-old bullmastiff.

"We felt it would be good for him psychologically," she adds. "He actually still marks trees, though I'm told neutered dogs aren't supposed to do that anymore."

Made from polypropylene ($119 a pair), solid silicone ($249) or a liquid-filled "ultra-plus" model with lifelike veins ($889), Neuticles were introduced in 1995 by Missouri inventor Glenn A. Miller.

Though it took several years for veterinarians to accept the product, Miller claims more than 230,000 pets in 49 countries have been "Neuticled" at 17,000 clinics worldwide. The procedure is performed mostly on dogs, but owners have had it done for cats, bulls, horses, monkeys - even an elephant.

"People like their male dogs to look natural," says Miller. "Neuticles are strictly cosmetic. But it encourages owners who are hesitant about neutering their pets to do it, and that helps reduce pet overpopulation."

Size, by the way, does matter. Neuticles range from petite (.63 inches in length) all the way to XX-large (2.75 inches).

While the operation is safe, not every vet is sold on the idea - especially when it's more about an owner's ego than the dog's. "It is mostly men who inquire about it," says Dr. Gina Antiaris of Miller-Clark Animal Center in Mamaroneck. "I've done [the operation] before, but we don't do it here. It's sort of unnecessary."

"It's really a cosmetic thing," says Dr. Richard Green, who has performed it several times. "Dogs do just fine without their testicles."

For dog owner Edgar Rivera of the Bronx, whose Jack Russell terrier and chihuahua were both neutered, Neuticles was never an option. "Fake balls for a dog?" asks Rivera. "That's just nuts."
Fixed! Implants for neutered dogs restore that natural look - Lifestyle - NY Daily News
