Kwame arraigned in federal court on 19 felony fraud, tax evasion charges
Yeah, it's a day old, but I just found out about it. Gotta keep up on the Kwame news.

Detroit -- First came embarrassment, when incriminating text messages exchanged with his chief of staff and mistress became public.

Then, criminal perjury charges, a front porch assault of a police officer, loss of his office and 99 days in the Wayne County Jail.

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was then sent to state prison in May after a judge found he concealed assets that could have gone toward his $1 million court-ordered restitution.

On Tuesday, inmate Kilpatrick, 40, steps into deeper and more treacherous legal waters when he is arraigned in federal court on 19 felony fraud and income tax counts that carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.

"The place you start rebuilding many times is when you've hit rock bottom," said Mike Paul, the former mayor's spokesman in New York City. "I'm not saying the mayor has hit rock bottom."

And he may not have. A long-running FBI investigation of City Hall corruption continues and federal officials won't rule out more charges against Kilpatrick related to allegations that include bribery. At least one member of his family -- his father, business consultant Bernard N. Kilpatrick -- is also under investigation.

Experts say pressure is mounting for Kilpatrick to try to strike a deal to resolve all of his escalating legal woes.

"In a situation where an individual has been indicted and there's a suggestion that there may be additional charges ... there's always the possibility of discussions with the government to see whether or not some kind of global resolution can be achieved," said Thomas Cranmer, a Troy defense attorney and former federal prosecutor.

Kwame cops a feel on Carlita, gets written up for misconduct. What a dumba*s.

Major violation of prison rules can affect probation, privileges

Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News

Kwame Kilpatrick has been accused of sexual misconduct in prison for allegedly groping his wife during a July 4 visit to the Oaks Correctional Facility near Manistee.

The former Detroit mayor, imprisoned for 14 months to 5 years for probation violations, was caught on video surveillance, reaching with his right hand to touch Carlita Kilpatrick's left breast while she met with him in an open room furnished with tables and chairs where other prisoners also meet with friends and family, according to prison officials.

Carlita Kilpatrick was fully clothed, according to prison authorities. Kilpatrick's wife was not identified by name in the misconduct report, but prison officials said the visitor indentified herself before the visit as Carlita Kilpatrick.

"Our policy says prisoners can do one embrace and a kiss at the start of the visiting session. At the end of the visit, other than holding hands, no touching is allowed," Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russell Marlan said today. "On the video, you can see him reach across and grab her breast."

Violation of prisoner rules can result in loss of privileges and can be a factor when an inmate applies for probation. Kilpatrick becomes eligible to apply for release on parole next July. Individuals, including family members can be banned from visiting.

"He has not been found guilty of this but he was written up for misconduct," Marlan said. "There is an administrative process with a hearing, but all of that is being held in abeyance because he is now in federal custody."
