will the officiating ever get better?
just like the rest of the tournament, officiating is not good today. This official is trying to make himself more important than the game. FIFA needs to get their act together.

RE: will the officiating ever get better?
To be fair, there have been some really bad tackles today. De Jong should've been sent off.

RE: will the officiating ever get better?
there have been some horrible challenges, there could easily be two reds. At the same time there shouldn't have been that many yellows.... second half is going to start more on this later.

The only really questionable yellow I remember was Ramos'. Didn't think he deserved one.

If De Jong is given a straight red, like he deserved, the game is probably a lot cleaner and better officiated. The yellows have done nothing to calm down the Dutch, who seem like they are trying to just beat the hell out of the Spanish.
That said, it's quite amazing Van Bommel hasn't earned his second yellow, the ref is trying very hard to not send him off.

Excuse me I meant to post this in this thread:
Ekou had it right. If you are going to card Heitinger then do it right away, don't wait 5 minutes.

this is getting worse and worse and worse, did anyone see that yellow where he just walked around with the card in his hand, up in the air but no player was even near him.

While Webb hasn't been great today, the Dutch did their best to recreate the Battle of Nurnburg from the 2006 WC.

I had no problem with Webb today. Those players were not giving him a choice at all.

I don't think the officiating improved as much as so many Dutch players had been booked that they had no choice but to clean up their play.

I am so glad the dutch did not win. I thought the Spanish would be the worst floppers, but the Dutch diving was just rediculous.
And De Jong deserved straight red.

96%!!!!! well if they got evaluated with that high of a percentage maybe we should take a good look at the root of the problem.... I guarantee you that more than 4% of the fouls called in the tournament were dives. I guarantee you they missed over 4% of offsides calls. Hell they missed 2 of the 7 goals the USA scored, that is 28.5%.
I heard that Arturo Brizio commented on TV the day after the game on the performance of the center official... He said that there was 32 mistakes made by Webb during the match, that is more than 1 mistake every 4 minutes... The worst and what sticks out the most in my mind, was when he stopped the match for a foul that occurred away from the ball and only verbally warned the player it would have been the players second yellow and just so happened to be the player that scored the goal.

That game was the toughest game you could possibly have to officiate. Webb maintained control of the match. I'm a referee and felt he did a very good job. Obviously De Jong should have been sent off for the cleats to the chest. Other than that, the Dutch have nothing to complain about. They played like hooligans the entire game and deserved every card they were given. Fifa's own President backs Webb on his performance as well as many other high level EPL refs. People need to back off of him.

The final game was a nightmare in many respects. If he had given some of the ejections that would have been deserved it would not have been much of a game. I'd be interested to see the analysis that you refer to ... I'm not familiar with Brizio.
I don't think that 96% is out of line (I have to wonder if this includes possession calls on goal kicks/corners). If the games were called at say 90% I think the refereeing would be universally regarded as a failure. I disagree with you on the offsides - there were perhaps 5-6 high profile offsides calls, including goals by Ronaldo and Tevez. The call on Dempsey was such a fine line that I don't know how they would grade the official. IMHO, it's not reasonable to criticize the referee on a call like that because players were moving in opposite directions and it's very difficult for the AR to narrow down when the ball is played. Humans simply can't make a call like that with any certainty ... I'll assert that as a fact. There can be no excuse for Tevez and Ronaldo calls - the ARs just did a poor job.
I'm not particularly a fan of Webb, but to ask a referee to do a substantially better job is asking a great deal more of him than it is of the (Dutch) players and coaches - to force them to abandon thuggish tactics. To accomplish that, you might have done better to change calls in the Brazil-Netherlands game, not the final. Interestingly, after the US-Netherlands friendly, the Dutch coach was very critical of EPL officials and indicated they were responsible for the brutish level of play in his players (i.e. the Stuart Holden foul).
