Trojans Win Fifth Straight With 2-1 Decision At UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Joey Metropoulos went 2-for-3 with a home run Tuesday and the USC Trojans tied a season-high with their fifth straight win with a 2-1 victory against the UC Irvine Anteaters. The Trojans have now won 10 of their last 12 and 12 of their last 16 games.
USC is now 25-19 on the season while UC Irvine falls to 17-28 overall.
Metropoulos led off the Trojans' second with his solo shot to left. The Trojans added their second run in the fourth on a broken bat RBI single by second baseman Jon Brewster, plating freshman Jeff Clement.
UC Irvine rallied with three consecutive singles in the bottom of the ninth. Jon Horwitz hit an RBI groundout, but USC's Bret Butler struck out Danny McCarthy and Andy Amara to earn his sixth save of the season.
The Trojans host No. 9 Stanford in a crucial Pac-10 Conference series, beginning on Friday (May 2) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. Stanford is tied for the conference lead with Arizona State while USC is tied for third place with Arizona, one game behind first. The series will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (May 3) and Sunday (May 4). All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
