I got the info from College Football Data Warehouse. I believe it is an accurate source for information on most teams. Of course, information from before the 30s is often a little suspect for all schools.

North Texas was playing football as a club sport by 1903, when they played the Denton Athletic Club. But UNT recognizes 1913 as its official first year of college football. We played one game that year against TCU. Unfortunately, we lost 13-0.

F&C had a brief but proud football heritage, led by Coach Wallace Wade, the Tennesse-native who became nationally famous as the HC at Alabama and Duke. F&C unfortunately suffered a bad fire in 1922 and I don't think they ever fully recovered from that. I'm not sure when the school closed officially.

We have too many universities in this state fighting the change-- Austin Peay, Tennessee State, and UT-Knoxville.

Peay has a guy on the board of regents that it will be "over his dead body" that we'll eve get the change.

We could have had MTU back when Memphis took the "state" out of their name, but we opted to hold out for UMT (probably a bad decision).

If anybody feels your plight, it is me with our University of Louisiana continuing struggle. I don't understand why anyone would object to UMT or MTSU. You remain Middle Tennessee. Why was Memphis State allowed to change to the University of Memphis and you guys cannot? What difference is it to any other university including Memphis? I don't wnat to turn this into a name thread, but geez why do so many care so much about what a school names itself?
