I think it means the back up job is wide open and they are creating some depth just in case.

Unless the Smith kid from Pennsylvania comes into camp and lights it up, they are probably going to be redshirting him. And since they haven't seen Smith yet in drills, they are probably hedging their bets as I'm sure they'd rather not throw him in there right away and burn a year if they don't have to.

But, yeah, doesn't look good for the current roster QBs battling for 2nd string.

I forgot about Smith, and now it makes sense. Maybe it'll shape up like the Brunner-LeFevour scenario. Wouldn't that be another pleasant surprise?! On the other hand, Radcliff and Rifenbury were highly touted qbs, but from the spread. Our defense is going to have to carry us for a while until a "winner" evolves. Over the long haul, we have a knack for go-to-quarterbacks---I'm confident one of these guys will step up.
