Lady Buc golfer fires best round of any NCAA player this year
GREENVILLE, N.C. (May 6, 2010) – ETSU sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) fired a school-record round of 8-under-par 64 and the Buccaneers’ women’s golf team also set a school mark with a team score of 3-under 285 during first round action Thursday in the NCAA East Regional hosted by East Carolina at the Ironwood Country Club.

Muehl, whose 64 was the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf this year, bested the previous ETSU single-round record of 67 set by senior teammate Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) back in 2008 and helped power the 48th-ranked Buccaneers to a tie for sixth on the team leaderboard. The team is now in contention for a spot in the NCAA Championships later this month, as the top eight teams in the regional earn a spot in the championships beginning May 18 in Wilmington, N.C.

Muehl currently leads a trio of players by three strokes on the individual leaderboard, while the Bucs are tied for sixth with two other teams and just five strokes out of first.

“I told the girls last night that nobody expects us to qualify for nationals because we’re the 17th seed,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team finished ahead of 10 teams with higher rankings. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t believe in our team, and they came out and proved it today. Nina’s play was just unbelievable. I’m so proud of the way she played and handled her nerves.”

Muehl’s bogey-free round included eight birdies and 10 pars, a remarkable day by any measure, but especially impressive coming on such a pressure-packed stage. Even so, the sophomore had few words to express the day even after reflecting on the round for a few moments.

“I just had the day of my life out there,” Muehl said. “It was amazing. It was just one of those days where everything was going my way.”

Along with Muehl, Jansone finished tied for 20th at 1-under 71, while senior Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport) and sophomore Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for 67th after posting rounds of 3-over-par 75.

Second and third round action will continue on Friday and Saturday. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com, and ETSUBucs.com will provide a full recap following each day’s play.

Can Muehl qualify for the NCAA finals as an individual if the team doesn't make it? If so how high does she have to finish?

Yes she can, the top two individuals in each region not on an advancing team will be sent to the National Championship.

In that case Muehl still stands a chance to transfer as an individual after shooting +1 today. Some players still on the course could take that spot away from her.

The team finished well back of the final team transfer spot after shooting +26 today.

Yes. Air Rifle back in the 80's. I believe it was 1983. Men's golf has came close a couple of times.
As far as individual championships, ie tennis, Track and field, etc... I don't know.

Neil Cusack won the 1972 NCAA cross-country championship. The team finished second that year.

This bio of Walker mentions it:

Walker bio...

.......Hale of Fame bio of Cusack:

ETSU Hall of Fame - see Cusack

Here's a nice article on Cusack, focusing on his Boston victory, and noting that Prefontaine was injured in that 1972 NCAA finals race. (Pre won the year before.):

Nice Cusack story......

Here it is in Wikepedia:

NCAA Cross-Country Championships

(Note Pre won it in '70, '71, and '73.....)

Pitt**** always thought it had never happened, but I didn't bother to correct him........

Some of you all who aren't from around here may not know that Johnson City was named "#1 Running City in America", by either "Runner's World", or "Runner" magazine back in the heyday of running here - in the late '70s.......
It was an amazing time here for running......

Thanks for posting that, I had no idea ETSU had a NCAA champion in Cross Country. As for the rifle team that was previously mentioned. I didn't think they won a championship. I thought they were the national runner-up? I could be wrong.

RE: Lady Buc golfer fires best round of any NCAA player this year
Correct............and not correct at the same time. As I recall, at a tournament, there are various 'categories' of scoring, and the combined of all the events is what ultimately counts for the team. I think we were second overall more than once, maybe 3 times, and were 3rd several times. But also, remember, that was a small field. The main competitors were ETSU, WVU, Tenn Tech, one (or two) of the regional universities in KY (Murray, and/or Morehead?), and sometimes maybe one of the service academies (I want to say Air Force but think that may be wrong). I'm sure I'm leaving out some, but it's not like there were 100 teams that had that "sport" - way less than 50, methinks...... Seems like Tenn Tech and WVU were perennially the "big guns" (lol).........

OK, here's a link. I notice this only goes back to 1980, but my memory is that they had the championships well back in the '70s. In fact, I KNOW they did, because I was friends with some of those guys (and girls). Jon Akemon was here in the '70s, if not earlier. So I suppose some other organization besides the NCAA ran the championships before 1980.

NCAA Rifle Champtionships - only 1980+

.................Okay........here they are before that. So ETSU *did* win it in 1974 - only two years after Cusack's victory in 1972, and only 5 years after the Grantland Rice Bowl victory.........
Here it is, and I guess according to this it was administered by the NRA(??) Or maybe they're just the archivists?:

ETSU Champs in 1974

..........but in any event it wasn't the NCAA yet..........

How weird to see UC-Berkeley there as rifle champions - even in the *late* '50s. Wow......

That last link has some interesting stuff in it.........like a national championship won by Virginia Intermont (which the press around here noted at the time, but didn't "ride" it to death, thankfully........)

As to that last link I posted, one can also find some national championships by Appy and even Lees-McCrae (no, not some small division, either).
C of C has a few championships in boating

And I had NO idea that Tennessee was the freaking curling champion in 2009 (although Div III, whatever that means in curling)! Now *there's* something the media didn't spend much time on...........

RunningFool, William & Mary was the 2009 "golf croquet" champion! Did you know that?

Morehead St. (women) was the bowling champ in 1998 and 2000.

In the 1880's, they named a Tug-of-War champion. Really.
And Ohio St. has absolutely *dominated* in synchronized swimming....
Texas won the 2010 Wakeboarding championship. Go figure......

And on and on...........

You know looking at that reminding me of something a friend of mine told me back when I was attending ETSU. He said ETSU won a mountain bike championship, sometime between 2001-2004. I saw Mountain Biking on that list and there are several years marked with a question mark. I wonder if that was the year ETSU might have won it. Is there an official list of mountain bike champions out there somewhere?
