I enjoyed Shutter Island as well. Maybe I'm just dense but I didn't see that ending coming. I'd love to watch it again though and see what you can pick up on through a re-watch.

i'm not sure if i would have picked up the ending either. i loved the film but it wasn't worth explaining to the missus what it was about. and is it just me, and i love leo, but does there appear something (for lack of a better word) phony about his acting?

I kind of got the feeling something was up.... just not that that was what was up. The whole Marshalls talking to the doctors scene and then the scene in the "secure prison" aroused my suspicion and then the lady's conversation with Leo in that cave aroused my suspicion to greater heights.... and then they drop that bomb in the lighthouse.... and then the final scene....

Then I had to immediately rewatch it t pick up on all the tidbits getting revealed... granted the audio commentary helped tremendously.

Watched Olympus Has Fallen this past weekend. Really liked it. My wife liked it.. However about halfway I felt like I had seen it before.. Then it I hit me, it had a Die Hard feel to it with a few changes.

We have The Great Gatsby at home to watch at some point.

can't understand how this can even be made into a movie. The book was hardly dramatic and the ending was about as anticlimactic as it gets.

RE: The movie thread
Korn: Encounter / bonus dvd to the cd for the album III.

Tonight, while cleaning up some stuff around my desk and organizing my cd collection I decided to play the bonus dvd of Korn's album called "III." i The bonus dvd was entitled "Encounter" and it was basically Korn playing live with no audience in a wheat field that they had crop circles made for effect, a stage area, and band logo. The dvd was about 2 hours long had them belting out a set list to no one but themselves and the roadies manning the gear for the set up. I'm pretty sure I watched when I got the disc originally but decided hey...why not watch it again. The interviews and commentaries in between sets was pretty cool to watch too. It was kind of weird to see them playing from daylight to sunset to night all those songs in the field. Pretty cool for a not your average concert dvd.

Korn: bonus dvd to the cd "The Path to Totality"
Basically "in the studio"/ behind the scenes making of for the album. Each track has its own associated video in the order of the album with fx shots and behind the scenes playing, studio antics, ect.... edited up. It was kind of cool to watch.

Kind of interesting to think of where they are now versus where they started.... I had heard of them in some of my Columbia House brochures but never got one of their cd's till someone made me a copy of "Follow the Leader." I liked it enough to get the back catalog at that point burned for me as well. I always kind of liked their metal, with funky bass, combined with their hip hop stylings in a lot of their songs...definitely their own sound. They are one of the few bands that can pretty much any style of metal and still kick ass. They are also one of the few bands that can pull off having rap artists rapping to their music and/or covering rap songs.

We disagree on this one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ender's Game. It's one I found hard to put down. If the director doesn't try to put too much of his stamp on the story and follows the plot of the book, it should be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made...

Having Harrison Ford playing Graff, and Ben Kingsley as Mazer gives me some hope. They picked some good actors to play the main adult roles...

Of course the best sci-fi ever written turned out to be a horrible movie. But I blame the director for the failure of Battlefield Earth...

don't misunderstand me, I loved the book. I was just aken aback by the rather abrupt ending. Obviously we're on the same page, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it

I will agree with you about the ending. But IMO very few authors, directors, or anyone else has figured out how to do a proper ending. It's a failing common to most. I think they're in too much of a hurry to finish and get paid to put much effort into working out the end...

And the books to follow barely brushed upon the subject, if they touched upon it at all. That goes for all the Shadow books in the series too...

certainly true that endings to epic stories are quite difficult to write.

It certainly didn't seem to bother Will Shakespeare, Mark Twain, or my favorite author, Terry Pratchett...

But it was a definite failure for Mel Brooks. The only movie he did that had a good ending was Young Frankenstein, and that's only because Gene Wilder wrote the ending...

Hmmm

I did dislike the song and dance show at the end of Blazing Saddles...it totally did not fit the body of the movie up until then.

Spaceballs was a decent ending.

Robin Hood Men In Tights, well.... I hated the movie so...

The Producers ... ehhhh.... wasn't into the movie enough to care about the ending.

Frankenstein was great.

Off the top of my head, the end to History of the World escapes me, even though I know I saw it, I haven't watched it in like 15 years at best.

The end of History of the World was a bunch of preview scenes for History of the World Part II, which never got made...

But it's good to be the King...

The Counselor / theatre
Ehh... with the casting I thought it would have been better. They never quite explain why Fassbender's character was tied the dioamond smuggler/drug dealer guy. They never quite explain why Cameron Diaz's character had here own side deals going on, although, she played one bad ass chick... don't F* with her. Brad Pitt's handler character was kind of a throw away too as he played like he was a player but never really got his schtick developed out. Rosie Perez's character was a throw away cameo almost even though here kind in the movie had a part in the overall plot. Basically, they had a lot of cool characters and actors to play them but never really fully developed why they were in their positions.

Star Wars Ep IV-VI / BR
--Just because...

The Crow / dvd
--Ehh... I liked the soundtrack back in the day somewhat. I think this is the second time I have watched the actual movie. It probably did some business due to Brandon Lee's accidental death but it felt like it could have been more and had the parts to make a cool movie. I've seen ZERO sequels in the franchise.

Escape Plan / theater
--GREAT action movie with Stallone and Schwarzenegger. I liked the whole prison break motif to their action. Pretty good plot twists.

A Nightmare on Elm Street ('10) / BR
--I really liked how the guy from Watchmen did Freddy. The movie was way darker and more sinister than the older ANoES movies. I was very surprised they never moved forward with more in the same vein.

The Final Nightmare / dvd
--I liked the whole real world setting and how Freddy comes back to life and how they played off the Wes Craven thing at the end.

RE: The movie thread
I went to see Ender's Game today. It's been one of my favorite science fiction books since I first read it in 1979, and I've read almost everything Orson Scott Card has written since. I've got every book that deals with Ender's universe. So there's a good bit of material for a bunch of future movies, if this one does well at the box office.

Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley were excellent, as usual, and the rest of the cast played their roles very well. The special effects were outstanding. It was a very good film, even though they didn't follow the story line in the book religiously, and cut out a bunch of stuff about the battle school. They also left out everything in the book about Peter and Valentine Wiggin using the internet to gain political power on Earth, while their younger brother was in space learning how to be the Commander of the Earth Space Fleet in the war against the Formic aliens. Perhaps they're leaving that for a future sequel.

It was very appeasing to the eye with all the vibrant colors and the soundtrack. It was different. I read the book not long ago so it was kinda still on my mind. I don't recall that Carraway was in a mental institution during the telling of the story, but if it wasn't in the book, it made for an interesting twist while he told the story.

Tobey Maguire as Carraway was good. I'm not so sure about DiCaprio as Gatsby though. I mean he did ok, but I feel like it was a role in which he reached for to handle the way Gatsby spoke. I don't know if anyone else could've done it or not.

Out of 5 beers, I give it a solid 3 beers and a shot of Jack.
