Both the wife and I are Tarantino fans.
Great movie IMO.
I liked the movie, even though the actual story was unbelievable. There's no way something like that could have happened in real life in the 1860s. But it's a great fantasy role for a black man to play, killing a bunch of slavers...
i believe that's why it's a movie
You mean to tell me a black man wouldn't have wanted to get a gun from somewhere and shoot up the plantation owner, overseers, et. all? It would have been a fantasy come true considering the conditions then. About the only unbelievable part would be him hooking up with the bounty hunter...granted one could have used slaves, free or otherwise, as means to ends.
heya swoosh, finally checked out the way, way back. i liked it enough, a little disappointed. the lady and i both got choked up at the end. what i didn't like about the movie was that some of the would be fun characters seemed superficial. sam rockwell was mostly over the top and the rest of the characters at the waterpark were type casts. but overall it was a great film. thought steve carrell nailed it as an *******. the kid was great.

damn, everyone i know who saw it, including myself, thought he deserves the academy award
don't get me wrong, he's by far my favorite actor, it just seemed at moments he needed to rein in the goofball manchild. there were parts where he was slacker cool and then obnoxious.
Iron Man 3 / br
--ok movie, ok sequel. My opinion is tainted due to a better Extremis story line I saw in a Iron Man animated series.
South Park S16 / dvd
--great stuff as usual
Hannibal S1 / tv on br
--GREAT series IMO. They picked a good guy to drop into the Hannibal role IMO. Good background story lines into some of the characters.
I was rather unimpressed. Not a bad movie but just not what I was expecting.
Anyone could have played Ben Affleck's part and they really didn't make you care about the hostages. They were shown in the movie for roughly 20 nonconsecutive minutes in an attempt at characterization but all they did was ***** at each other and so when the time comes for the rescue operation to go down I found myself not caring whether or not they made it.
John Goodman was the best part of the movie and he was in it for maybe 5-10 minutes.

Set during World War II, an 8-year old boy living in Poland doesn't understand why the boy across the fence is always wearing stripped pajamas. The 8yo is the son of the commandant of the concentration camp and obviously the boy is a Jewish prisoner. They boys become friends which leads to a twist at the end.
Kind of slow paced but I an a WWII fanatic and the twist at the end is very good.
The Protector (Tony Jaa) / dvd
--Great martial arts movie to show off Jaa's skills. Basically he is part of a clan that raises elephants for dignitaries in Thailand. His dad gets killed and his elephant gets "stolen" along with here kid. Jaa is on a revenge tour de force to bring down the folks that killed his elephant and stole the kid.
The Protector ( Jackie Chan) / dvd
--Pretty good crime drama in the mold of say Cop Story. Also stars Tony Aielo. I think this was Chan's second English language movie.

PTNC, it was Thailand, not Taiwan. Taiwan has no history of royal elephants, while Thailand does - for at least the last 2 thousand years. He was also trained in the Muay Thai fighting style, which is Thai in origin...

Ya know...something didn't feel right when I posted that.... it is Thailand... NOT Taiwan.

These things happen. I just happen to be familiar with southeast Asia. I spent enough time there in the early 1970s...
I'm also a martial arts movie fan, and The Protector is a favorite, even if some of the fight scenes aren't very well directed and lack the proper continuity...

How so on lacking in continuity?
I mean plot wise? Heh, all you need in a martial arts movie is a serviceable plot to get you from the beginning to the end cause all you are really looking for is good fight scenes.
There were several scenes where he missed the timing and had to recover. That's poor directing, or editing. I can't say which without seeing everything filmed, and not just what was on the screen...
The most glaring issue was during the fight scene where he was fighting his way up through all the bad guys. Remember the scene where there was a partition along the hallway, and a guy came from behind to grab him. When he went to throw him over his shoulder, he missed his grip, but the guy helped him throw him over his shoulder. Look at that scene again closely. You'll see that the guy he was fighting let him have his way with them. Had it been a real fight, he'd have been screwed on some of the moves in that scene...

Hmmm I'll take a look... my dvd has the FULL version/Unedited version shown in his native country as well as the "edited" international version. I think the international version has the dubbed audio where the native one is all subtitles.
As far as the elongated fight up the staircase in the back of the gangster bar I believe in the Audio Commentary they did that in continuous take to keep it moving... so maybe the guy aided the fight.

If they did it in a continuous take, that probably explains that scene. But it's not the only one where the fight looks contrived. Look at it again more closely, and you'll see what I mean. Thai filmmakers have a long way to go to catch up with Hong Kong or Hollywood filmmakers. They need to spend more time on continuity checking...
At any rate, it's a very good film. But I'd prefer to see a more professional jobs done. Tony Jaa deserves better treatment for his martial skills...
shutter island. i wound up thinking about this movie for much longer than i did watch it. even though i knew what the outcome was going to be it was still suspenseful. enjoyed it.
trance. didn't get to see rosario dawson completely naked. oh well. for a danny boyle film, it was ok.
frankenweenie. not my favorite tim burton film, but i thought the story was sweet.
the place beyond the pines. i don't mind character study films, but i didn't like how this particular film was two separate character studies. and i don't particularly care for bradley cooper. this film needed more ryan gosling. and ray liotta's typical character was completely unnecessary. i could have enjoyed this more.
mud. enjoyable film. though i had to fast forward most of the ending as my flight was touching down
^ I loved Shutter Island...didn't expect the ending...as far as the deal on it... the more I watch it though, I pick up more and more the subtle clues to something not being right. Very well done IMO.
