I thought it was really good. Admittedly, I have never seen any of the Alien movies. I think that helped me enjoy Prometheus for what it was. Those searching for answers to Alien seem to be the ones who are most disappointed by this film. I want to talk about the movie so I am going to post a thread with spoilers, I think.

You need to see the Alien movies. The BR print of the original Alien is stunning.

They got the BR set (Alien I-IV) for like $30 @ Wal Mart.

Yeah picked the set up for that price like six months ago, one of the better BR purchases I've made. Speaking of, I made a few recent purchases that were pretty strong as well. Got the Coppola restoration Godfather trilogy on BR for $19.99 a few weeks ago at Best Buy, got the complete Rocky box set on BR from amazon for $19.99 as well.

Just got in the mail a couple of days ago I, Robot BR 3D, Shawshank Redemption BR digibook, And Full Metal Jacket BR. Expecting arrival today on Alice in Wonderland BR and Cool Hand Luke BR.

The Hobbit / Theatre
--I liked it and it was of equal quality as his LoTR trilogy. The only problem I had with it was it felt like he gave me the extended/ directors cut version of the film in the threatre already. To that end I felt the movie could have been tightened up from the 2:50 running time.

Ted / BR
--I still think its a pretty funny movie but I can't stop seeing Peter Griffin every time Ted talks. I also think the father son psycho teddy bear snatchers were underused.

The Bourne Legacy / BR
--Solid follow up with good acting and action but I still think the original Bourne Trilogy had a little more "heart" to it.

Talladega Nights / dvd
--Love the movie... just so funny.

I'm really kind of stoked to get the new Total Recall this week with the extra footage added in.

Green Lantern- HBO/HD

Ugh. What else can I say, besides 'ugh'? GL used to be my favorite super hero as a kid. I'm not the only one. Challenge is that he was (is) campy and fairly silly (thus the appeal to kids), but obviously well known enough for HoF rocker Donovan. Anyway, this movie was the perfect time to tighten up the story (ala Iron Man). Instead the movie tries to stay true to worst of the comic, except when it substitutes in even more camp, some of the most cliche and uninspiring at that. (Courage is more important than fearlessness. Humanity is not weakness, it's a strength).

Anyway it's unfortunate b/c the effects were very good. Parallax was eerie and translated well to the screen. His tie to long-time foe Hammond was the one good adjustment. Oa and the Lantern Corps were visually good, although that was something that should have been largely left out. The dialogue had some decent humor. Carol was cute and there was come chemistry between Hal and her.

With all that going for it, this movie still whiffed big time. In the past 30 years DC hasn't put out a SH that was any better than 'pretty good'. This is among their worst.

C-/D Soley based on good visual effects.

SkyFall-theater

I was disappointed, but that's probably due largely to enormous expectations. The movie was very good, but of the DC movies, I still prefer Casino Royale, having said that Bardem was fantastic and I'll definitely buy on blu.

Hitchcock-theater

Very good, definitely recommended. Expect nominations for Hopkins and Mirren, the rest of the cast was very good as well, though maybe not quite nomination worthy. I think Michael Stuhlbarg will be one of the years unsung heroes come award season having given two very good performances as George Yeaman in Lincoln and as Hitchcock's agent in Hitchcock, but I would be (pleasantly) surprised if either garnered nominations. He was also in Seven Psychopaths which I haven't seen, but intend to.

RE: The movie thread
This is 40-theater

I must admit that I'm a fan of this style of comedy. Knocked up, I Love you, Man, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 40 Year Old Virgin etc. The somewhere between raunchy guy comedy and cheesy romantic comedy. I will admit that Apatow's movies are often a touch too long for the genre, but I've usually found that the movie was funny enough to justify it.

This was not the case with This is 40. I really wanted to enjoy it, but it was overlong and while funny, not nearly as funny as the aforementioned movies. I'll give it another chance when it hits HBO just to see if it grows on me with another viewing, but I was highly disappointed.

I was really surprised by that one, I think Ferrell has been more miss than hit recently, but I liked that one. Wahlberg has surprisingly good comedy chops, thought he was one of the bright spots in Date Night.

Django Unchained-theater

Attempted to go to a 9:00pm showing at one theater and the parking lot was at 100% capacity, like not a single empty parking space, and while I was circling the parking lot I saw them post a sign on the box office window that it was sold out, my buddy instantly got out his phone and picked up tickets on fandango for the next showing, which was 10:15 at a theater about 8 miles away. So we headed straight there, sat in the lobby and waited to be let in and got really great seats in a great, large auditorium. I don't know if it ended up selling out, but it was very close. If it was like this across the country, I'm sure the Weinsteins are very pleased.

Anyhow, the movie was fantastic. Into my new top 3 for the year.

1a-Moonrise Kingdom
1b-Argo
1c-Django
2 Lincoln

It was very much a Tarantino film, and to be honest, it can be argued that it's a buddy cop movie, but it's a damn well made one. It was funnier than I expected honestly. At nearly three hours, there were just a couple of times I felt the pace could be improved, and some scenes that probably could have been left to the home release bonus features, but I don't think even that hindered the movie.

I can't see it winning best picture, but it would certainly be deserving. I can't see them giving it to Django or Moonrise Kingdom and the reviews for Les Mis have been good, but not great, so I think best picture will come down to Argo, Lincoln and probably Zero Dark Thirty.

I recently saw Lincoln in the theater. It was a great movie and if Daniel Day Lewis gets an Oscar for his performance it will be well, well deserved.

He would be the first to win best actor in a leading role three times. There are those who believe the academy wouldn't give that distinction to a Brit.

Another little quirk of Oscar trivia, no one has ever won best actor in a leading role in a Spielberg directed movie.

Having said all that, he's my pick.

Django($15 mill) and Les Mis($18 mill)both exceeded expectations and projections at the box office. Making them the third and second biggest Christmas day openings behind only 2009's Sherlock Holmes which had the added benefit of Christmas being on a Friday.

Reviews have been mixed. I'm hoping it garners a few Oscar noms so it will get a wider release next month. Even in Atlanta its only showing at one art house that isn't anywhere near my home or work. I may go catch it there this week, but I'd prefer to wait for it to come closer to me.

He's been nominated for best actor in a comedy or musical at the Golden Globes.

It annoys me how liberal the Golden Globes are with that category. Pretty much every movie that isn't a 100% drama goes in that category. That's the category The Artist won last year(The Descendants won best drama), and it won best picture at the Oscars, that's the category Shakespeare in Love won in 1999 and it won best picture at the Oscars. I wouldn't categorize either of those movies as comedies, but the Golden Globes do.

I haven't seen Hyde Park on Hudson yet, but I imagine it will be along the same lines as The Artist and Shakespeare in Love. Only considered a comedy because it's not explicitly a drama.

Bill Murray is the kind of guy that I think the academy would like to reward at some point. They recognize that he was a truly brilliant comic actor who made a graceful transition into more dramatic roles, while still hanging onto that comic genius. I think he'll win one eventually and this is the kind of role they'd definitely embrace him in, so I think he's likely to get a nomination, he just also has the misfortune of being up for it in a year that Daniel Day Lewis played Abraham Lincoln and Hugh Jackman, a man I suspect the academy also really loves(see his great performance as host a few years back and his strong Broadway resume) playing an iconic Broadway role in Valjean, in a movie directed by Tom Hooper who won best picture just two years ago for King's Speech.

Best actor in a leading role will be interesting this year, in my opinion(admittedly having not seen Les Mis or Hyde Park on Hudson) appears to be DDL's to lose. But as I may have pointed out in a previous thread, there are those who suggest the academy would be reluctant to give a third best actor in a leading role to a Brit, when no American has previously done so. So perhaps they give it Bill Murray or Hugh Jackman both of whom the academy admire, playing roles that could be career defining roles.

I guess it all depends on how much you subscribe to the "politics of the Oscars", I think there's something to it, but I'll personally be surprised if best actor in a leading role goes to someone other than DDL, because I believe politics aside, when a truly remarkable actor, gives a truly remarkable performance, I don't see the academy denying that actor his/her statue, because of where they're from or what they may have done early in their career(see: Jim Carrey 6 Golden Globe nominations with two wins and zero Oscar nomination, admittedly several of those GG nominations weren't Oscar worthy, but to think that he didn't get an Oscar nom for any of The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is just crazy) so I believe DDL will win, but I fully expect Bill Murray to garner a nomination.

Also based on the last few years of nine or ten movies being nominated for best picture, it could definitely sneak into a best picture nom, but it has no chance of winning. I'll be shocked if it's anything other than Argo, Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty.
