RE: The movie thread
Ok some catch up:
Expendables- DVR on Epix. I was disappointed w/ this movie. It wasn't terrible, but felt disjointed, and the scenes just seemed pieced together. I liked the scene w/ Arnold, Bruce and Sly, but it didn't carry the movie. The ending scene was a bit saccharine, but would have been ok if I cared about the characters. The last line was terrible.
Jet Li definitely had the best part in the film, "I would have win."
Inception- DVD. Great execution of a concept. Liked the characters, liked the premise, loved the effects. However, the ending was very weak, reminded me of a student film. There was room for a big twist here, a la Shyamalan, but even if you let that pass, you gotta choose how you end this. Leaving the audience wondering is amateur.
Chicken Little- DVD. Ok, this is relatively old, but we liked it quite a bit first time we saw it (my son was about 4 at the time, and he became inspired to play dodge ball). This time around, I liked it as much or more. The cast was top rate, and it showed (or perhaps could be heard). Delivery was excellent throughout. The plot and scripts were very, very good, w/ a very understandable and uplifting subtext.
This movie doesn't get high marks on imdb, and I never heard much about it at the time. But, I'd say it's Pixar quality in every aspect.
Highlander: The Source-(SyFy broadcast) It's hard to believe that each and every Highlander sequel begs the question, "Is this the worst film ever?" and poses a legitimate shot at the title. Alas, there can be only one, and this isn't it. It isn't worse than Highlander II, but it is terrible. I truly believe that this is the student script from the son of a connected producer. The cast comes from the TV show (which actually was a highly entertaining response to the movie), but they are uninspired. The script is terrible, and the delivery seems rushed at the end of the scene, after each and every scene has been stretched to tedium in order to build the suspense. Like the other sequels, this storyline makes little sense, (but it is slightly more coherent than II). Worst of all, they re-recorded the soundtrack music. It seemed as if they didn't have the rights to the original, but there is little worse than reinterpreting the pinnacle album of Queen's history. If you have an unwelcome house guest, insist on watching this.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice- I didn't want to hate this movie, but I did. We almost gave up on this dog more than once, but persisted. Don't get me wrong, Nic Cage does his standard job, which is very strong. But the character of Dave the apprentice, is horrific. From the dialogue to the casting, you have a hard time finding a more annoying protagonist. Several times I found myself wondering if having the most hideous evil take control of the Earth would really be worse than watching Dave.
In the end the loser here, other than the audience, is Cage. He needed a winner to get out of debt, and Disney gave him a raw deal.
