RE: The movie thread
I'm really enjoying the Amazon Prime series "Jack Ryan". Well written, well financed & good acting with John Kryzinski in the title role. I'm only to episode 4, of season one, but so far, so good.

RE: The movie thread
Venom / theater
--I liked it. Of the three versions on Venom I have in my memory I liked this version the best. Good action, good comedy, and the dialogue between Venom and Eddie Brock was done well IMO. that said, my brother said that if you know more about the character, how this movie played it out might not be your thing.

The Predator / theater
--Solid action movie. Good use of action and comedy. Some interesting story points that they bring up about Predators and their history and nature and about what is their deal with humans in terms of the movie lore from prior movies. I did see some plot holes though.

The MEG / theater
--interesting return the concept of Jaws. It was fun and had decent action.

The Defenders S1/NF
--rewatched for lead ins to DD S3

Iron Fist S2 / NF
--Better than S1 and had a lot of cool backstory and new story elements entertwined. The ending of the final episode has me wondering what will happen if it gets to a S3.

IF S1 / NF
--Prepped up for IF S2. Still my least favorite Marvel NF season.

The Punisher S1 / NF
--just wanted to rewatch again. Also, to revisit Kingpin's reaction to the Punisher and Matthew Murdock's taunts before DD S3 starts.

Daredevil S1 and S2 / NF
--Prepping for DD S3. IMO, the pluses and the minuses for both seasons kind of even them out but if I was pushed, Kingpin puts S1 over the top.

Han Solo / BR
--A decent movie and I liked a lot of what they did with the material but my only issue was the droid picked for comic relief and its relationship with Lando. IMO, its kind of tough to do a character spin off story that can satisfy the fans of the original actor's portrayal.

Gotham S4 / NF
--just starting since it popped up on NF a few days ago.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides / BR
--Just loved the whole Blackbeard aspect of it.

Friday the 13th / BR
--Watched my recently acquired BR version of the movie. Honestly, my dvd looked just as good. I liked this movie in the series.

Predator 2 / dvd
--Watched for prep for The Predator. I still can't figure out how this all star cast couldn't make a good movie.

Predators / BR
--Watched for prep on The Predator. I liked it as a new spin on the series at the time. I still think it was a pretty solid effort.

Alien Vs. Predator / BR
--If they had kept up the r rated action of the parent franchises it would have been a lot better than it was but as is, it was a pretty solid movie I thought.

The Expendables 2 / BR
--A solid and more coherent plot than the first one. I loved JCVD in the villain role.

...I'm sure there is a few others but I am drawing a blank between my last post and this one LOL....

RE: The movie thread
The Predator -

It's a fun, kind of silly movie that doesn't try and take itself serious. I enjoyed the supporting cast more than I did the "main guy". Who knew Olivia Munn was funny and kind of a bad-azz?

The House with a Clock in it's Walls -

Interesting. Liked it more than I thought I would. Meant to be a "kids" movie, but I was surprised how intense and scary it was at times for a movie aimed at younger people.

Venom -

Once you get past the first 1/3 (which I thought kind of dragged), it's a cool movie. Good action, Tom Hardy is great as always. You KNOW there will be more, which is a good thing.

RE: The movie thread
Bohemian Rhapsody / theater
--Actually, I thought it was pretty damn legit. I am glad they kept his "lifestyle" in pocket to the story and didn't over/under do it for "ratings" and/or "sensationalism." Lots of cool behind the scenes stuff with getting their record deals, some of the background on some of their biggest songs, and how that Live Aid performance came to be and his situation with his early onset of AIDS.

Castlevania S2/ NF
--Really liking it but only half way through the 2nd season as of now.

Underworld//BR
--Just wanted to to watch a vampire movie LOL.

Van Helsing/dvd
--I liked Hugh Jackman's take on this character and how they involved a lot of movie monsters.

Gotham S4/NF
--A pretty good season. It will be interesting to see how this S5 goes. They played some interesting cards involving the Joker though.

The Babadook/NF
--An interesting take on its material. I can't say I overly liked it but I didn't hate it either. The whole family dynamic kind of working wit The Babadook kind of made for a cool story element. Also, the kids issues and how they related to his interpersonal relationships with fellow relatives, schoolmates, and teachers as well as his own mom made for a interesting angle too.

The Exorcist I and II / dvd
--Favorite Halloween movies of mine

Halloween I, II, IV, and V / dvd
--rewatched for Halloween purposes.

Freddy vs. Jason / BR
--Personally, I felt they did a great job with the material and it could have gone a lot worse than it did.

E.T. / br
--Its still a really heartwarming story and I still get into it like I did when I saw it in the theaters way back in the day.

Saw Bohemian Rhapsody.

I don't know what movie the "critics" were watching, but it wasn't the same one I saw.

Thought is was easily one of the best movies I've seen all year.

If Rami Malek doesn't get an Oscar nomination, they should just stop giving the award out.

RE: The movie thread
I sometimes like the really weird movies. Especially the ones from Troma to the likes of The Killer Tomatoes and the Killer Klowns.

Here who appeared in or worked on Troma movies,

Vincent D'Onofrio The First Turn On 1983
James Gunn wrote Tromeo and Juliette and other Troma projects. More famous for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone music department, went on to create South Park. Cannibal! The Musical
Eli Roth actor in Terror Firmer and Citizen Toxie:Toxic Avenger 4, with Stan Lee as Peter Parker.
Samuel L. Jackson Def By Temptation
J.J. Abrams Night Beast
Carmen Electra The Chosen One: Legend of the Raven
Billy Bob Thornton Chopper Chicks in Zombietown
Oliver Stone The Battle of Love's Return
Kevin Costner Sizzle Beach, U.S.A.
Vanna White Graduation Day
Marisa Tomei The Toxic Avenger
Michael Jai White Toxic Avenger parts 2 and 3
David Boreanaz Macabre Pair of Shorts! Before he played Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Paul Sorvino Cry Uncle! 1971
Stan Lee Return to Nuke 'Em High Pt. 1, Citizen Toxie Toxic Avenger 4 as Peter Parker, Parts of the Family
Joe Fleishaker appeared in many Troma. Last one I saw him in was Poultrygeist, Night of the Chicken Dead.
Corey Feldman Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV
Jorge Garcia (Lost) Tales from the Crapper
Ron Jeremy Class of Nuke 'Em High 3
Ginger in the Morning 1974 starring Fred Ward and Sissy Spacek
Irwin Corey Stuck on You
Chris Noth Jakarta
John Carradine, Paul Walker, Stella Stevens and Claude Akins Monster in the Closet also had the guy who played the Maytag repairman.
James Avery Deadly Daphne's Revenge
Gates McFadden (ST:TNG) and Morey Amsterdam When Nature Calls
Martha Quinn, Hal Sparks and Don Calfa Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town
Wil Wheaton Fag Hag
Lemmy Terror Firmer, Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1
Mario Díaz Terror Firmer former MLB player
Beverly D'Angelo, Aron Eisenberg (Nog on Star Trek: Deep Space 9), Brion James, Stephen McHattie, Moon Zappa and Francesca Hilton Pterodactyl Woman from Beverly Hills
Ted Raimi, New Found Glory, Wes Craven, Tales From The Crapper
Hugh Hefner Citizen Toxie

I watched several of these movies. Another one that did not have big name stars that was weird that I turned off was Yeti: A Love story. The Yeti is gay. Talk about Beauty and the Beast and the Yeti is the Beauty.

Caught the new Fantastic Beasts movie. Much better overall than the first one but I feel as though I need either read up on the HP universe from the first set of movies or read the books for this new series as it appears there is a lot of background information and tie ins I am missing.

Watched it this weekend and concur it was very good. Having read all the books and watching the movies, I would recommend reading the books (or at the minimum Deathly Hallows). DH gives a lot of insight into the relationship of Dumbledore and Grindelwald that is not covered in the movie series.

* Spoiler Alert*
For anyone else who watched the movie, was it just me or did Leta Lestrange tell Newt or Theseus she loved him at the end of the movie? IMO she was talking to Newt. I think there is a lot more there that will be uncovered in the future.

I kind of got mixed up about her and Newt and then he dropped "she was marrying my brother" angle.... so yeah.... lots of "hmmmm" going on with that.

I saw it over the weekend as well.

Thought is was fun and thoroughly entertaining.

Not being a book reader, when I watch movies like this I take it on it's OWN merits.

It it good?
Was it entertaining?
Did the story make sense?
Did I enjoy myself?

I liken it to Game of Thrones. I don't care how "the books" portrayed it, I'll NEVER read them. I only care about the movie/TV show as a stand alone.

They did that on purpose. She clearly has strong feelings for Newt as well and my assumption was that she was speaking to both of them, though Theseus wouldn't have realized she was also talking to Newt.

It's an enjoyable film, but even more than the first it's missing the whimsy and joy of the Harry Potter movies. That's not a criticism - there's no reason to make this a kids movie - but for me it takes a little away because the comparison is so obvious. Also, not really a big fan of middle-series movies that don't resolve anything significant. I assume the next two will be similarly structured but I hope not. (I think the HP movies do a good job of resolving conflicts from each school year, while also building the suspense toward the battle to come.)

I did enjoy getting more background in the Grindelwald/Dumbledore storyline because, coincidentally, I'm reading the very end of The Deathly Hallows with my kids right now and the next to last chapter is Dumbledore describing some of that episode to Harry. Adds a lot of color to the story, for sure.

Agreed.

Each HP movie resolved itself for its own story line but kept dropping nuggets as to the overall end game.

************

Ralph Breaks the Internet / theater
--Better than the first overall IMO. But there were some key points from the movie that didn't get resolved by the end.

Creed / BR
--getting back in the groove before I go see Creed II. And, YES, I will revisit Rocky IV!

Ready Player One / BR
--I was interested when it hit theaters but never got to see it. My brother got it on BF sales and I we watched it. I liked its nostalgia play, I liked its story, and I liked the action and cinematography. I don't know how the book its based on timed things out but it seemed like the from the opening to finding key 1 was paced about right, but it seems like the pace for keys 2 and 3, and the ending came kind of fast... like it was fast tracked to not make the movie too long. I don't think I'd buy it but I'd say its a solid watch.

Thor: Ragnarok/ BR
--I just loved that this movie nailed the humor, action, and plot so well. While not quite at the level of performing those same tasks like in the Avengers... it really delivered a great movie to watch. Easily my favorite Thor movie.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I and II / BR
--wanted to rewatch these after seeing some things in FB 2.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Price/ BR
--same as above.

FB2 The Crimes of Grindewald / theater
--Liked it a LOT more than the first movie of this series. Lots of juicy nugget drops in it too. I still think that so far what this series is missing is the "enchantment" angle the HP movies had. This seems bland by comparison but way more politically driven in terms of tone and scope.

Robin Hood - The word awful doesn't justify just how bad this movie was. If this isn't up for the Razzie, I don't know what should be.

Creed II - You know what the story is. You know what's going to happen. You know how it will end. You don't care. It draws you in and makes you go "yeah"!

I thought Creed II was decent. That being said, I wish they would have done more with the angle of Drago and his son.

I'm a rock climber and obviously biased, but still comfortable recommending two climbing movies:
Free Solo
The Dawn Wall

Both movies are documentaries featuring El Capitan in Yosemite, and both feature (different) climbs never done, and generally thought of as near impossible feats. The climbers are compelling and the movies are very well done.

OK, we can go that route (no pun intended). The Dawn Wall...

Tommy Caldwell, the main guy in The Dawn Wall, is also one of Alex Honnold's buddies and plays an interesting part in Honnold's attempt in Free Solo.
