RE: The movie thread
PTNC.. I agree.. The new TMNT was good. Yes they changed the origin story, but it was entertaining, especially for someone like me that can remember being a kid and going to the theaters and seeing the original movie that was done.

Guardians of the Galaxy- DVD- I didn't read many comics growing up. I'd read a Batman here, Superman there, and maybe an X-Men thrown in. Never heard of this group.. But the movie was very entertaining.. Good plot, good humor, and if it weren't for some of Rocket's commentary and language, I'd recommend it for kids.

TMNT- DVD- Like PTNC and I both stated, good movie. Should've gotten more praise.

The Professional- Starz!- I haven't seen this movie in years, and I could tell because I was a lot younger when I originally watched it (which was whenever it came out on HBO/Cinemax, etc) because watching it now, there was some awkward scenes between the Leon and Matilda characters especially after she tells him she's fallen in love with him. But it's a good movie. Excellent drama and storyline.

This is Where I Leave You- DVD- Dark comedy that came out earlier this year about a family who's father passes away and they have to stay at their childhood home for a week. It has a good cast with Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Katherine Hahn, Rose Byrne, Timothy Olyphant, and Adam Driver. My wife and I were able to remark, yea my brother/sister/mother would do that. That sounds like this person. Not one for the kids and it's kinda dark, but overall a good movie.

The Dark Knight- Blu Ray- Continuing the Batman marathon.. Things could be said about how Nicholson played the Joker in the original Batman. For the time, that was a good role.. Heath Ledger as the Joker didn't leave me cringing, instead I truly believed the guy was real and a psycho. 1989 Joker was a goofball... 2008 Joker was certifiably insane.. Nothing was too over the top, no crazy guns or hi jinxs.. Just good old fashion mayhem. To me this is where Christian Bale started calling it in for the franchise. His performance was ok, but luckily Morgan Freeman, Ledger, Gary Oldman, and Aaron Eckhart were able to carry the movie.

RE: The movie thread
Finally got around to watching Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday.. someone remind me what the purpose of Drax was supposed to be other, than setting the loss of the Stone in motion?

It seemed like everything he did, Groot did as well, Drax just used knives, Groot used his limbs (figuratively and literally).

But I'll admit, I thought the entire movie was hilariously great.

@ GotG

I liked it, I wouldn't mind watching it again for scanning for details purposes, and I did like some of the humor but I could not get to buyable worthy on the movie itself.

@ The Professional
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/?ref_=nv_sr_1 or another version?
I've only seen the Natalie Portman/Jean Reno one. It was decent.

1000 to 1. The Cory Weissman story. Netflix

A college basketball star suffers a stroke in his freshman year, struggles to make a comeback. A bit of a tear jerker. I don't think they did a very good job with the basketball scenes. Great story and worth a watch.

RE: The movie thread
the theory of everything. quite a love story. if you're looking for a stephen hawking bio, you've stumbled upon a superb date flick

only lovers left alive. jim jarmusch! even though this is a movie about vampires, i wouldn't recommend it to too many people. it's very talky, which is, jarmusch. and there's almost no action, mostly complaining. vampires aren't this goth. i enjoyed it. so two lovers, bound by centuries, rekindle their love affair in detroit.... it's very nuanced and i'm terrible at summarizing. layers of underlying meanings. it's pretty sweet. did i mention one is a rock god? and tilda swinton rules

safety not guaranteed. a good idea, so so follow thru. seattle magazine needs desperately needs stories. journalist sees ad for needing a partner to "travel back in time. only done this once." he gets two interns to tag along to find out about this dude. it's a story of outlandish regret (they really really could have toned that down) and coming to terms with yourself.... by altering the past. we didn't care if we finished it but actually really had to see the ending

Blade Runner/BR Anniversary SE
*complete cut* of film*: BR offers several "versions" of the movie to watch. I'm still not sold Deckert was a Replicant but, if he was, he seemed a lot more confident in himself than the others known to be Replicants did. That said, I wonder if Tyrell did some experiments with him like he did with ____ or the escapees. A pretty cool sci fi film in its own regard that really put into motion stuff in The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, and that eternal man vs. machine question.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise Borders 1 and 2 / BR
--2014 Animated series that appears to be the prequell/set up story for how Batou, The Major, Aramaki, and the whole gang got together and formed their unit Section 9.

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer/Frosty the Snowman/ Frosty Returns / dvd
--Had to watch them off the cheap dvd pack I got a few years ago for some Christmas light hearted movie stuff.

The Grinch/tv
--Jim Carey's movie happened to be on tv tonight and I watched a little of it--I hadn't seen it since I saw it in the theaters.

Sherlock Holmes: " and "Game of Shadows" / BR
--Wanted some good myster/thriller stuff. Both movies were very well done IMO.

A Most Wanted Man- DVD- Not a bad movie, however, it's not one I'd tell everyone to watch. Good story line and excellent way for PSH to end his career on.

Wish I Was Here- DVD- Funny movie about a family that is struggling cause mom works and dad wants to be an actor. Grandpa pays for private school until he's diagnosed with cancer. It felt like an Indy, but in the end it had several good laughs and the story was good. The acting was pretty good as well.

Batman Begins- DVD- Continuing my Batman marathon. I like the re-boot. Watch the 1989 Batman and this one, and it feels like this one goes further in depth in the Batman legend.

I bought several Blu Rays on Black Friday that I've seen but are on deck, along with two Netflix movies. Here's what's on deck for the next few weeks:

Guardians of the Galaxy- Netflix DVD
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)- Netflix DVD
Dark Knight- BR
Dark Knight Rises- BR
Man of Steel- BR
Grudge Match- BR
We're the Millers- BR
Grown Ups 1&2- BR
Hunger Games 1&2- BR
The Departed- DVD
LOTRs- BR (This is all 3 LOTR movies)

I've seen all these movies, I'm going back to re-watch.

GotG I felt was a summer popcorn movie. I got the DVD because I love seeing Marvel Comics in live action but I think it ends up being the new ID4: great feel good movie upon release that you feel guilty for having enjoyed upon re-watch years later.

X-Men: DoFP I thought was wonderful. A great baton passing film from McKeller and Stewart to the new heirs. Plus the movie has to added bonus of retconning away X-Men 3 which was hot garbage. As a side note, I loathe Halle Berry as Storm and luckily her pregnancy during filming kept her screen time to a minimum.

I felt both Batman movie series suffered from the same thing: The repetitive nature of Batman's rogues. The Joker is a psychopath, and the Penguin's is typically portrayed as a mob boss. Catwoman is a thief while Ra's al Ghul is a terrorist. The bolded are ultimately the archetypes for most of Batman's villains.

I plan on watching the Europa Report tonight.

RE: The movie thread
Just got done watching Maze Runner (On Demand)...

Admittedly, the books are designed for teens, so I never read them, but I remember reading Lord of the Flies.. and I LOVED this relation to that book. LOTF + a little bit of Blade Runner = a decent movie. I'll admit, I LOVED the Gally character (Will Poulter), was absolutely a blast as the 'villain'. I didn't like the fact that part 1 never really gave an acceptable story as to why the "training" was going on (even the bit at the end just seemed a bit rushed), and was really disappointed that they never really explained why the hero (Thomas) went into the Glade himself. although supposedly the books do a really bad job with the back-story of the main characters as well

So obviously the trilogy will be needed for the movie series to work; but again, if you want your kids to get hooked on some classic literature (LOTF - even the author of the book said he got the idea from LOTF.), start them off with this movie, point out some of the similarities and then see where it goes. And it had some nice 80's vibes to the movies (Aliens, Goonies.. someone said there was a bit of a Karate Kid vibe).

I'll say I'll give this one 6 out of 10.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull / BR
--Haters can hate, I liked the movie. BUT, my beef is with the cinematography--the white light in the movie/transfer is awfully bloomy. And in the BE release some times some scenes appear to have a noticeable differentiation of CGI and real world sets/props/actors.

RE: The movie thread
The Fluffy Movie- DVD- If you know who Fluffy is and enjoy his stand up, this will be an ok watch. To me the movie was good, but it wasn't as funny as some of the hour long specials I've seen him do before.

The Equalizer- DVD- Excellent movie. It reminded me if you mixed "Man on Fire" and Eastwood's "Unforgiven" together. Excellent action, good plot, and great dialogue.

Let's Be Cops- DVD- The best parts of this movie was the 30-45 minutes at the beginning and the last 20-30 minutes. The middle was eh.

The A-Team- FX- I've seen this a few times, it's a good watch and if you liked the 80s series, you should enjoy this. I thought it was well done.

Man of Steel- BR- I've reviewed it before. I'm a huge fan of the Superman movies minus Superman Returns. I thought it was well done and a good movie minus the end fight scenes with Zod and Superman.

The Hunger Games- BR- I read the books, and the adaptation from the book to the big screen was pretty good. I liked the interpretation and still my favorite of the two I've seen.

Wedding Crashers- DVD- I forget how funny this movie is until I watch it. Of course there's about 20 minutes that could be cut out, but overall it's a favorite of mine.

On deck:

Catching Fire-BR
Grown Ups 1&2- BR
Grudge Match- BR
LOTR 1-3- BR
We're the Millers- BR
The Departed- DVD
Fight Club- BR
Inglorious Bastards- BR

Star Trek: Into Darkness/BR
--I liked it a lot. I thought it was a cool "remix" of Wrath of Kahn, that said I need to watch WoK a little more so I can totally feel out how draw the line between each.

Mad Max / Netflix
--I hadn't watched the original in a LONG TIME. Honestly, I don't get what was so great about the original to spawn TWO sequels. The cars were kind of cool. The action wasn't too bad....but I just didn't see the material/story line there to drive further sequels.

I saw the new Night of the Museum tonight. The original holds a soft spot in my heart because I was going through a divorce and dealing with the new relationship with my son, just as Stiller's character did in the original.

The new one was ok. It was odd seeing Robin Williams in his final role (Mickey Rooney as well but he had a much smaller part).

Yeah, the slow, relentless zombies definitely bring the dread of inevitability. They're always coming for you. Always.

Fast zombies might as well be a pack of hyenas.
