I have possibly one of the biggest letdowns on the way to my house today, Hangover III. I loved the first one. The second one was eh ok.. The last one I've heard negative things about, but I gotta see how they end it.

If anybody is looking for a pretty spooky film, Shadow People is pretty good. I worked on this project and I must say it is worth a look. It is on Netflix or Red Box.

I'll put it in my que.

If a fellow Golden Eagle recommends it, it's gotta be good.

It's been one of my favorite science fiction books since I first read it in 1979, and I've read almost everything Orson Scott Card has written since. I've got every book that deals with Ender's universe. So there's a good bit of material for a bunch of future movies, if this one does well at the box office.

Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley were excellent, as usual, and the rest of the cast played their roles very well. The special effects were outstanding. It was a very good film, even though they didn't follow the story line in the book religiously, and cut out a bunch of stuff about the battle school. They also left out everything in the book about Peter and Valentine Wiggin using the internet to gain political power on Earth, while their younger brother was in space learning how to be the Commander of the Earth Space Fleet in the war against the Formic aliens. Perhaps they're leaving that for a future sequel.

Looking forward to seeing this, it was a great book. Unfortunate that they cut out out the battle school stuff (whatever that was), but I'm not surprised about them cutting out the sibling storylines. I can't really see the other books making it onto film successfully as the story changes pretty dramatically from the first book.

So watched Hangover III last night. Not too bad. Better than the second one and not as good as the first. It wasn't too Alan heavy, which I believe was the mistake of the 2nd one. Zach Galifinakis or however you say it, is a funny guy, and was hilarious in the first one because he had the zingers. This movie he had a couple and they went back to the let him only say funny stuff. Don't make him as a lead character.

Out of 5 beers.. I give it 2 beer and a glass of Knob Creek on the rocks.

I loved The DaVinci Code book but hated the movie. They changed and left out too much.

I couldn't get through Angels and Demons the book but thought the movie was good.

The most recent books in the series, Earth Unaware and Earth Afire, about the first Formic war and the events leading up to it, were very good books. There's another sequel to these 2 books that will hit the shelves in the coming year. I'm looking forward to reading it as well. I think they'd make a couple of good movies.

The books in the Shadow series, the ones that follow Bean's career, would make good movies, for the most part. They start with Bean's birth by illegal genetic manipulation, and go on to describe the events that led to Peter becoming the next Hegemon, uniting all of Earth under one government. It eventually goes on through Bean's searching throughout space to find a solution to his condition, which he has passed onto his children, and will lead to him suffering an agonizing and early death.

I actually thought Angels and Demons was a better movie and I agree, they left too much out in DaVinci Code. They did the same with Angels and Demons. The 3rd book-- The Lost Symbol does not need to be made into a movie if they're going to leave stuff out or substitute things. The book stood on it's own.

RE: The movie thread
world war z- danny boyle does zombies better. though i enjoyed it. the south park episode kind of spoiled the film a bit

killing them softly- yeah, so what? i got a thing for brad pitt. the constant updates on the recession soured me as did the late great james gandolfini. i enjoyed andrew dominik's first film the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, it's one of my favorite movies. good film though it looks cooler than it is.

eylisium- of course you knew it was going to be political. district 9 was fantastic and a valid critique of south african apartheid. eylisium as a film was very well acted, pretty though unnecessarily violent and completely asinine. neil bloomkamp builds his stories around an agenda. in eylisium he wants the inhabitants of a crumbling world to live forever. i'm really sorry if i'm spoiling this for you all. it's a violent two hour plea for universal health care.

My wife and I went with her Brother and Sister in Law and their 3 year old son to see "Frozen".

Not a bad movie. Good story line, amazing animation, and of course you had the standard Disney singing, which the voices doing the singing were pretty good.

My favorite characters were the Reindeer and the Snowman. Josh Gad voiced the Snowman. You might remember him from the short lived "1600 Penn", he was also in "The Book of Mormon" on Broadway. He's also in "Jobs" as Steve Wozniak.

RE: The movie thread
I saw a bunch of movies on the plane rides to and from Europe

"This is the End"- Laugh out loud funny. I'm pretty sure I missed the details of about 50% of the jokes, but I could tell when they were just ripping on Hollywood and each other. This had so many jokes about how shallow each of them were, and how shallow Hollywood is, that I couldn't help but stay entertained.

"Arthur" (2011)- I wondered why they'd remake this movie...but I saw why. This had all of the charm of the first, but with some excellent tweaks that added to the character and the story. I loved the first one 30+ years ago, but I think this was better.

"Monsters U."- I liked the concept, Mike gets some positive treatment, and an explanation of what he's about, Sully shows character flaws. But the execution was off. The story was cliched in its telling, and the scenes just didn't flow together. They used their recurring joke from Inc, one time, then dropped it (for no good reason).

"Grown Ups 2"- I actually did laugh out loud a couple of times. Occasionally humorous, but really not worth seeing. Less of a plot than the first one, and that one was really thin. There is zero chemistry among the stars, and the kids are actually the only ones who show much charisma. Sandler and Hayak actually try, everyone else mails it in.

"The Internship"- I liked this a lot, for one good reason: While the plot was standard (old guys bring new skills to show young lions that they have much to learn), it turns out that our heroes succeed largely b/c they WORK HARD. No coasting on old talents, not just lucky that their old school methods could work. The whole good guys team worked hard and improved, and the old guys were constantly affirming and positive, instead of cranky and critical.

The "bad" sister is Idina Menzel. She's been in RENT and Wicked. She's phenomenal. I won't see Frozen in theatres. No kids to justify going to it but I will probably rent it on XBL once it hits Zune.

She wasn't exactly the villain.. BTW, you don't need a kid to go see a movie like this. My wife and I went to see Puss N Boots for my 30th birthday. It was my choice.

to each his own, but you chose some terrible movies to get your ass 'cross the atlantic. from my last trip not more than a month ago, i had an excellent selection.

however, i did just watch this is the end. i enjoyed it. i don't enjoy comedies mostly these days. the seth rogen films only seem to make me laugh. it's probably because i'm stoned off my gourd right? what now? i feel like eminem in eight mile

I really liked the original Dudley Moore version and was hesitant to see this updated version, based on the previews and reviews. Plus, Russell Brand is really good, but in smaller doses. But maybe I'll give it a shot based on your feedback.

RE: The movie thread
Saw two comedies recently...

Delivery Man in the movie theater: It was one of those movies where you left thinking, "yeah, it was pretty good," but then you completely forget about it 5 minutes later. I don't know if Vince Vaughn was the best choice for the role here, but it had it's good moments. Very few laugh-out-loud scenes, more chuckles.

We're the Millers on On Demand: This one definitely got more laughs out of me. If you liked Horrible Bosses, you'll probably like this one (I think it's written by the same guys... and Jennifer Anniston plays a slut again).

Your review is probably the best review I've seen for Hangover III. Most of what I've heard is that it's horrible, saying it wasn't funny at all (it was intentionally written more as a darker noir flick than a straight comedy) and had way too much over-the-top Chow.
